It's the big Island, west coast. Just south of Kona. A few surf spots listed on wannasurf: http://www.wannasurf.com/spot/North_America/USA_Hawaii/Hawaii_Island/index.html Maybe you could hook up with CHIEF, his profile says he's located in the Kailua-Kona area. I spend a couple of weeks in Kona eve...

Even us darker skin folks need to get check out EVERY YEAR if you been exposed to burns when you were younger, Case in point, to SCARE those who think otherwise to get checked. Lost a good friend five years ago. He was 48. Italian dark complexion had a tiny mole on the back of his neck just in the h...

Hey Gsurf NO I don't recall ever being out with the helos over head for my sake. But I've been on the helping end of a lifesaver rope pulling a surfer straight up a cliff on daya like that. I've also seen a drowning in surf like that in the coves just north of the Lane. We call It beach and there i...

Old Lane Story
Old Lane story, Early-mid 70's Perhaps Jon M. was out on this day as well. It was in mid winter at a time when it was not uncommon to have 10-15 kneeboarders out at the point. This particular day started off at 6-8 feet in the morning with a large swell forecast. The swell was steadlily increasing a...

Re: Sewer Peak vs First Peak
Surfhorn Dan, Now that's an idea! If we have The House to use as a staging area for smaller north swells so that we can use Sewer Peak (we'll have to rename it to something else--who's gonna travel hundreds of miles to surf a place that they erroneously think is connected to a sewer? How'zabout &qu...

I had something like that when I was a kid ( 35 years ago)- the doctor called it ( apologies here for spelling and memory) Osgood Shlauters Disease (?) Surf bumps is what we called it. Cortisone injections in both knees and the direction not to kneel on hard surfaces was the treatment. Have been tr...

A Toothy Companion
A number of bros continue to chide me for my reluctance to surf the coast north of Santa Cruz. They understand why I'm hesitant but they keep bugging me anyway given the fact that I used to surf alot of the coastal reef breaks between SC and HMB. Why my reluctance you might ask? Three words "li...

Speaking from experience and having a therapist wife who hammers this info into me all the time. Housemaid's knee is very easy to diagnose. Look for a swolled, red lump just below the patella on the front of the knee. If you have it's pretty obvious. On the other hand, a swollen (read tight ) knee t...

Been riding one of Dale's Neumatics for over a year now, here and in Hawaii. They are a blast but they do take getting use to since they are a completely different beast than anything you have every ridden including old style matts. Just staying on top of the matt the first day will be a humbling ex...

Mixing cardio workouts is always good. If you like swimming try joining a masters swim group. For a small fee a coach gives you work outs and will work with you on improving your stroke. Using pool toys such as fins (zoomers), pull floats, and paddles will also strength you as well as improve your ...

Use deck pad and traction pad on tail. I could only image what my knees would feel like surfing without a pad in the islands sans wetsuit. My knees are still recovering from years of kneepaddling as a kid. The traction pads on the tail give me positive grip with the fins on and prevent fin rib dents...
