Jusr re-read my post, I wasn't saying that those people in question were scared, more that it is a common marketing ploy to highlight areas that people are afraid of and offer them a plausible solution (no matter how small the success rate)

Scared people make a good market - whether they work or not people will always buy stuff like this - just like insurance you hope you never need it.
