Hi Crox

Cheers - I think rail volume may have had a lot to do with it. I also found the rest of your post very instructive. The last para about compromise is a good observation. Unless we order a quiver we are in effect striking a compromise.

Hi Crox Sorry about biting - it was actually the Tim Minchin quote in Red's post I that got up my nose. Need to develop a thicker skin ! I cannot answer your question directly - probably already apparent to you. Perhaps if I had some video of my frustrating sessions on the low volume board I referre...

Let's avoid the condescending stuff, its an open forum and one must a few expect divergent views (misguided or not). They marketed plastic paipos in the late 70s - Bellybogger. Spoon deck twin fin devices you could duckdive them to the bottom with ease. Flippers were needed and you caught waves with...

Hi Crox I should have re-read your comment on the boat analogy. I do differ with respect to buoyancy. My hypothesis is that at stages in certain manoeuvres our boards slow down dramatically and unlike stand-ups we cant compensate as easily to get going again. In these circumstances I contend that bu...

I just thought about that ship analogy, you would change the buoyancy by replacing the air in a boat with foam- foam is denser so you would reduce the buoyancy marginally. One reason foam is handy in boats is that it is not as easily displaced as air when things go pear shaped.

Hi Crox I am probably stating the obvious but removing volume from anywhere reduces buoyancy. For those of us that feel our shapers have got it right (and didn't ask for an easy paddle option) then a reduced volume facsimile would appear to increase the likelihood of bogging down at the end of round...

After trying one of Kev's Strapper twin fins a few years' back I was inspired to buy a second hand one with a similar plan shape 5'10" 23" wide but with less foam - over 1/2 " thinner at 2 1/8 " from memory. Had trouble catching waves on the thinner one and kept getting caught up...

Thanks Jeff

I enjoyed that article, some nice shots as well. Reno riding his fish at Narrabeen certainly influenced thinking here.

Lefty - very funny observation :D

We owe those oddball chargers a debt - must remember that when I am being belted across some reef after attempting to pay homage to their exploits.

More excuses than a politician with dodgy travel expenses - would it be easier if we just organised a picnic at Southbank?

I'll do the coleslaw who can bring the travel rug? :)

Lefty I don't think many do get upset with our system. It's main objective is keeping swimmers (local and tourists) in a small area where assistance is at hand. Tamarama is an exception in terms of sharing with surfboards but my local is a small beach where the flags and buffer zone might occupy a t...

Funny thing was our last decent get together in April and the surf was all time. In fact the A frames at the local spot were enough to persuade the assembled contingent to head (retreat) to Point Cartwright where it was just as big but easier to get out. Waves weren't as heavy either but a few of us...
