funny how off topic this discussion turned, to preference rather than technique most people struggle with flippers on in the surf zone at the shore line, the bigger the fin blade = bigger problems. sometimes simply entering the water walking backwards till the water is thigh high does the trick, but...

Tar Beach

Tar Beach was boiling hot, and the visibility was next to zero, and lugging all our stuff onto the beach was problem enough given that we kept losing sight of each other, and the shape of the beach didn’t help, owing to its slope and height, mostly round and long, like a huge half round slab of pipe...

Bud is the MAN when it comes to surf stories, I have nothing in memory to compare.
But I figure my best wave is the one I'll surf tomorrow.

A question: given all the subjective responses (including my own) what if you don't feel boost cos the acceleration curves you feel are very smooth, like the principal question on your mind when riding is "How do I slow this thing down?" As was stated earlier, my Blast fish hops up to spee...

the problem with skeg pairs is they don't always support each other. Why I posed the question Do you feel boost all the time? Do you have to surf them "heavy" or driven? to feel the effect? really concerned with exess drag. No? they just fly in unison? slotted? I understand the argument, a...

yes, the aerodynamics of sails are a hot topic among those who depend upon wind to move, but use your head, do you see any of it (slot effect) repeated beneath the water line in yacht research? do you see any examples in nature among marine animals using it? Just cos skegs look like sails doesn't me...

oops well its all fluid dynamics with one caveat, under the pressure/speed WE surfers work at most of the claimed effects are negligible. Air is a compressible fluid and all the discussions concerning "slot effect" ect. are applicable to trying to keep a completely flexible material (sailc...

my reference point for quad is a Blast, but your initial treatise seemed to rule them out as the trailers are closer to the stringer (no Headwax effect?). But I will say this: my Blast fish delivers huge projection out of turns (more burn than boost). I attributed that to its pedigree (Hawaii and al...

Quad Effect... do you feel it on EVERY wave? if not then what conditions? was out about a week ago (water 42F, full suit) and this bloke was out on his new Merrick, getting nice rides, ballyhoo that this was the fastest board ever (not sure of the model). I asked him how he knew this fact. "I c...

can a shaper identify the "sweet spot" of his board before it hits the water dorje, I have Hart's pad system on my Flashpoint swallow and he hit the mark in both design and pad placement. I would submit he knows exactly where the board should be ridden. my Blast has a full pad, but I subm...

I feel your pain Mike.

Same here in NY.

The storm track seems to have shifted north. Instead of lows barreling off Hattaras and striking for open ocean, they stay over land and don't make sea till Boston.

Domes

It was common surfer knowledge among those traveling to Puerto Rico that stepping on an urchin was going to be painful. Aside from pulling the spines buried like splinters in your epidermis, the standard homeopathy was autologus urine applied to the offended area in stream form. Now this method work...

I've been using one of these surf caps for the last 10 years

the one with the ear coverage and bill

absolute best, even wear it under my hood cos you can flip the bill up when paddling
