Realness

Hey JDC, believe me, I get the difference between a beginner/intermediate spot and an advanced spot for surfing... I know it's dangerous to have beginners and kooks out at advanced spots or on big days, I've seen people run over each other or get cut off because of it. While it is uncool to drop in,...

Dropping in?

Granted, I'm new to the sport, but everybody's told me that it is uncool (and often dangerous) to drop in on anyone, no matter what they're riding. I'd like to think anybody out there is due some respect, just for being there, and if they're catching waves and having fun... why does it matter if the...

Soft top board from GLS surf

I rounded up some cash and placed an order with GLS Surf Co. in Southern California for a soft-top kneeboard (5'6" x 23" x 3"). Don't think they've made one before, so we'll see what I end up with. They seemed excited by the idea of a new product... you never know, could be the start ...

Surfing and back pain

Kneeboard surfing -- and the stretches and conditioning that goes with it -- has kept me out of a wheelchair. Swimming out -- even if I can't catch a wave -- relieves my back pain better than any conventional treatment I've tried. I have 6 damaged discs, and was starting to lose my ability to walk, ...

Why are there so few kneelos in NorCal?

I live in Northern California and have only seen 3 people kneeboarding, ever (not counting me!). Yet there seem to be a lot of folks in Southern California. It's not that we lack surfers up here - the good breaks are always crowded. We have bodyboarders. But almost no kneelos. Anybody know why? Just...

Being a grom...

Or is that "grommette" (like the thing you put in canvas??) Whatever, I guess I'm young for the kneeboard community ( 42), and having lots of fun learning. Related question about the demographics of the kneeboard community: are there any other WOMEN kneeboarders around? Or am I starting a ...

Wiiiide kneeboards?

First kneeboard I had misfortune to try out was double-stringer 5'7" x 26" x 3?" -- huge thing that surfed like a plate and was impossible to duckdive. Jon Mel at Freeline in SC said it was the widest kneeboard he'd ever seen. It was made by the Froghouse sometime in the 80's. I'm a b...

Thanks, I just figured out how to use the product album and sent Bud a PM.

Kneeboard deck pads

Any suggestions where to get deck pads? John Mel at Freeline in Santa Cruz doesn't have them anymore. Bud (of Blast Kneeboards) has an email addy that doesn't work -- his website is down also. Dave Parkes says he's sending some stuff to USA sometime soon, maybe... There's a guy in Hawaii named Ken B...

Post-script to A Little Story

To all who read my post about the lady who got her face slashed in the surf... I sold her my 6' soft top board today. I let her try it out, and she had so much fun she ended up buying it off me. I was out surfing my fiberglass board (very carefully!). My 6 months practice with the soft board paid of...

Get on and go

THanks guys, I'll go talk to John at Freeline -- the board I have is one he made, he should know what it can do. Think I'll save the fiberglass board for smaller easy days and keep trying on my softboard the rest of the time until I build up more strength and flexibility. That way, at least I'll get...

Fiberglass board for beginners

In reading the design forum I realize how little I actually know about kneeboard design. I've only seen and surfed on older fiberglass boards, with limited success. I have a 5'10" Freeline from the late 80's -- posted it for sale on the site here, and zero replies. Clearly this is not a desirea...

duckdiving

Biggest problem I have with duck-diving is keeping control of the board once I'm under the whitewater. I lose traction of my knee on the board. Board gets ripped sideways, does a spin so I come up NEXT to it, rather than on it -- I'm still hanging on, but then have to climb back up. By time I'm back...

There's always another wave...

Seeing that girl get her face slashed really REALLY was a case of bad timing... Just couldn't go in with the fiberglass board after helping patch her up that day. But there's always another wave... I've picked up a Gath helmet (found a used one, sweet deal) and a soft fin for my 5'10" fiberglas...

A little story

After all the comments I've gotten about fiberglass boards, I decided to take my fiberglass board out of the closet and give it another try. As I was gearing up on the beach, a young woman walked out of the surf with blood running down her face. She had a deep cut about 2" long on her cheek, ju...
