It is all about the hips. Having one knee about an inch in front of the other allows the hips to turn way more. If the hips can turn then the shoulders can turn. Facing the wave and leaning into the wave when tube riding seems to work better for me, especially in small surf. Paul and Jim from Santa ...

I face the wave going right. Backside or switch stance going left depending on type of wave. About an inch to two inches for the knee differences. I find frontside better for point breaks, bottom turns and tube riding. It is hard to tube ride backside for me. Also, back side is great for off the top...

How long is too long? Anyone reach a limit yet?

During the World Contest at The Lane, Baden Smith told John Mel of Freeline Design: "just keep going longer and keep moving the fins farther up." I am currently watching Simon ride his long Black board at Grajagan in one of his early movies. The question came to me, has anyone found a leng...

I am 250 lbs and 6'5". I now ride a 6'0" by 23" and used to ride a 5'10" by 21.5". (Fins back) A couple of guys have said that my boards don't ride any different when the waves are good but my new board is much better over the dead spots. I ride SCruz quite a bit and those w...

Correct EQ; foam on stringer not on rails.
Hard to sink a thick rail, especially backside.
How 'bout da Bears yesterday; was there. They are getting better.

Fly Alaska!

Fly Alaska Airlines!
Just got back from surf trip and they only charged me $25 each way for my board. She knew it was a board and only charged me the normal bag fee.
Gotta support the airlines that don't rip off surfers for board fees.
Good trip. Good surf. Light, grumpy, local crowd. Shhh!

I think you are correct.
All athletic movement comes from the hips.
Leaning into and extending out of turns makes your surfing more dynamic and powerful.
It seems to make the board feel more loose and lively.

Kneeboard Photo of the Week:

Great shot. Best shots and best surfers always have their rear end off their heels. Doesn't matter if you surf low or upright, sitting on ones heels kills the liveliness in a board. I have had the pleasure of watching Bill Lerner coming at me in a tube and he was off his heels and the board was so l...

Don't go off on me for the last post. It was meant with no bad intent. Those that know me, know that. I know all these guys that responded to my original post. And I know the spot in question is no secret, I just choose to be courteous to the few locals that are left. And no, I am not one, despite s...

Whoa! I never said where it was.... It was just somewhere that had good waves and everyone got a couple of good ones but the lulls were long and there were way too many closeouts. Very few people got more than a few waves. Fun, but not worth flocking to...it is just a beach break, after all. Love th...
