Hey Andy,
Nice to hear you're still out and about. So that one year o/seas trip extended a bit, huh?

If you take Andy surfing, make sure it's a nightmare left reef take-off like his home break called Meanos. Because he's a hellman.

Interesting, Andrew. You reminded me that one of the ways to check bottom curve is to put a straight edge at angles on the bottom deck. It's quite feasible on concave bottoms to find an absolutely flat "curve" from the rail 1/3 back, diagonally across between the fins to the last 6" o...

Great summary, Jamie, on what is undoubtedly the hardest kneeboard contest in the world.

I'll let you into a secret. Keep a horizontal panel about 4" wide down the stringer. Faster. No side effects. Panel fits inside concave and turns vee into a "mesa". Gives a flat final 2" in the tail which is what you want for drive (no vee out the tail, ever!) If you're worried a...

roll with lifted rails in nose to flat to slight spiral vee between fins to flat Snapped the board I had with this bottom. Having too much fun on slightly bumpy 4' point break. Been riding concaves since, but will cut me another flat bottomed board as soon as I can. They go good when concaves are st...

7'0" kneeboard

Test pilots needed. I don't have the cahones. I had this blank machine cut 5 years ago. Cut it when I thought I could cut it in bigger waves. Not so sure now. Got around to having it finished by my friend Stump. Tested some new lam techniques. Stringerless 7'0" bamboo top and bottom, 2x6oz top ...

ClanB What happened is that in the 80's Aussies figured out that you can overcome a lot of the problems inherent in riding a short kneeboard with the fins way back if you create a long rail line and then move the fins forward to maintain looseness (That whole length at the water line thing). The res...

Tips from a "how to surf book". I've used them for a few years now and they seem to work (but I do have big hands and long arms driving a light frame ;-) Stroke as close to the centre line as possible - ideally along the stringer Arm in at close to full stretch, out before hip line Arm in,...

The question really is, "Can a scanned board duplicate the original?" At best it can be a close approximation - maybe better, maybe worse. There are a lot of variables beyond the blank's 3D shadow. As my mentor says: Shape to glass, glass to sand- a lot of things can change between a faith...

I try to not paddle too much for waves - I'm too unfit. I try to get into position, sink the tail really deep, and use the pop out to get going, then two strokes and up. If I have to grovel onto a wave, it's Maytag time. With the long (6') boards I can't kick and paddle effectively at the same time,...
