modern kneeboard designs compared to modern shortboards

Post by rick mottola »

Disclaimer: Please pardon the comparison to standup boards, it is only a reference point for me since I am a recovering standup.(Sad to say I'm only about 24 hours sober) :D

For the record, my definitions of modern kneeboard and modern shortboard
ImageImage
vs.
Image

In the professional kneeboard world, is there a a generic set of dimensions for say,
a rounded pin thruster. somewhat like the standup 6'2"x18.5"x2.25" squash tail thruster?
How about nose and tail width?

How does nose and tail rocker compare?

Rails?
Bottom contours?

anything else? all info appreciated.

I realize this is very generalized and doesn't take into account surfer size/weight.

KIK3,
A board as long as you are tall and 22 to 23 inches wide is common. If your having a board made for you, nose and tail width, rails and rocker are probably best left up to an experienced kneeboard shaper based on his templates and fin setup. Kneeboards are much less "cookie cutter" than your typical 6'2" machine shaped stand up board. And by the way, the kneeboard in your picture is a great place to start.

That is why most boards dont suite the kneboarder because they look for different things in a board than a stand up. They dont really care about color or size or hype or blitz. They see suble things that work for them in their riding and the places they ride.

What is with the bash all the time beeline.....

Just cause I dont follow the queen bees to australia or some legend KB from SCal doesnt mean I have to get a board that is a cookie cutter kneeboard like everyone else.

I know what to look for in a board and have been doin this for 35 years myself away from the media hype-mainstream like you all do and it has worked for me.

You plug your wave hole!! And I will plug mine!!

BTW Where does this Bill E. surf at anyways,,,,

following on for the above
Standup bottoms can be less forgiving because standups can leverage off the back foot or front foot to "step" the board over its bow wave. Watch less agile standups on a not so good board and see the water they push, while agile guys never seem to have that. This gives standup shapers the freedom to push certain performance characteristics over others.

Kneeboarders have less possibility to shift weight front to back so kneeboard bottoms have to be way more refined - more "pure" if you want. They have to get the water in under the board and let it go easily. This is one of the reasons standup shapers get so excited when they see a good kneeboard - the water flow is perfect without the rider stanping tail to nose to tail.
