KenM wrote:Mik, Larry Mabile in San Diego (shaper for KG, Swift, etc.) uses a 3 plug FCS setup for keel fins that works fine. If you add plugs to your board to use keels you'll want to position them so that the trailing edge of the keel is about the same position as the trailing edge of your back quad fin.
1) Please define "keeled fin"
2) So if it is recommended to have the trailing edge of a twin fin set up as you say, then i can't/shouldn't just use the front set of my quad set up.
What would be the arguments against doing this? (ie using only my front fins as a twin fin set up, and removing the rear fins)

thanks

From Swaylocks Swaylopedia.
A low aspect ratio fin, usually found on twin fin fish.
Example:

Traditional keel fins usually installed with no cant, parallel to stringer, and back on the tail.

Rainbow Rocket Fish FCS Fins - FCS Compatible Keel Fin from WetSand web site.

Go ahead and experiment. It's the best way to learn what works. Take out the back fins and see how it goes. If you're curious, there's no reason not to try it.

Mike, thats the beauty of fin plugs. You can easily experiment with all sorts of fin shapes and placements. I would think having just your forward quad fins in would be too loose but trying it wont hurt. Clyde Beatty has a setup with the keel fin pictured above in the forward position and a small disc fin in back. Experiment! You'll come up with what works for you. Let us know what you find out.

shoelkopf uses a "reverse quad" not a twinser/twinger??...i feel it ride more like a tri-fin then the freeline quad MIK911 has or the kane garden twinser i tried in mexico..
.
..all had verry different feels.....the twinser tracked too much for me but was fast and stable....the twinser also had its rear fins near the rail..

..the freeline quad would need better/bigger waves to compensate for its high-rocker and would like more drawn-out s-turns then the hacks and gouges i can do with the shoelkopf......but the freeline was really stable where the shoelkopf is not..

..i cant get vertical with the twin-keel TRi-fecta fish ive rode..it just tracks too much but is sweet in the barrel!!!.....

MIK911...
...ive tried the twinser setup on the freeline and it doesnt work for that board......id look into the MR twin-fins from FCS and that should really broaden thaT BOARDS WORKING RANGE....whoops!! (sorry for yelling)

FISH RIDERS-TWIN OR QUAD

Howdy gents, just reading this thread, and it dawned on me that my latest board is a ''fish''or to be more precise, fish like.It seems that defination''fish''has changed in recent history.
The point being, this board is an aussie tri, fairly short, wide, pulled in tail to a small swallow.Don't want to get into a verbal brouhaha,
Look at a few of mannies fishs[mandala]and notice the pulled in tail via fairly strong wings.Yes I know, they are quads. The object is quick turns in beachies.Since it has a pulled in tail is it still a fish?Manny thinks so.....I've got a pulled in tail also, and it's a tri.Is it a fish?I think so.......
Depending on your point of view, there's a third alternative.

cheers
:)

Hola hermanos- gotmy first quadfin in'89 shaped by richard gomez-mezfish-and have been riding quads ever since- some with flipped vee, some with channels ,all with wings. I find that they are faster, allow you to take off extremely late and vertical, and can turn on a dime!Wings and channels should flow to fin placement.
