Hi Bruce
How are you mate? Was surfing with Kyle and the boys on the weekend and also last November at Phillip Island. They where ripping in the 1ft waves.
Do you make Kyles boards or is he making his own?
he has been telling me, he makes his own board via a shaping machine. They dont look like your boards, and he is selling them under his own logo.
??
Simon and myself are going down the coast this week to do a training weekend with all the NZ Grommets that are in OZ at the moment. should be good, the forecast say we may get aussie pipe on. wooohoooo
cheers mate

Hart,
Thanks for the boards, mate.
Surfed both 6 footers in knee-high (to a kneeboarder!) waves as Bendelong this weekend. They were smooth, fast and didn't catch once. Pity about the pilot but.
I was stoked that I could use the same board I rode in 8' Uluwatu and Kuta Reef to compete in 1-2' waves and not embarrass myself totally (except in the semis).

Kyle and other things
Umm..not too sure where to start..
Hey Steeno,
Bendalong and Manyana are two places I love to surf. My first trip was in the very early seventies way before leggies and Green Island was the ultimate KB cutback wave..almondy and long. Pity about the swim over the reef into the shark pit but, if you happen to come unstuck.
As I was swimming once to get my board I asked a local (at low tide) how far does this reef stretch..he answered and said swim over there, into 'the pit'. He followed by saying " Don't worry, they're only here in June..they come here to mate"
It filled me with confidence, considering I was surfing during the May School Holidays..the early bird perhaps?
But to Kyle. After Kyle's amazing third World Title win in the World Surfing Games, South Africa mid 2002, we had a long, meaningful discussion.
He wanted to create his own label and wanted to do it with computer shapes. Steen, you know that everything I do is done by hand..and done for a purpose (read an individual..not a showroom).
I do not endorse shaping with machines, apart from a planer, that is.
Kneeboarding is not a soft option and kneeboards do not appeal to a mass market.
I supported the fact that Kyle wanted to do his own trip, but based on that premise, it had to be on his own. And Kyle, if you ever read this post mate, I still do and hope it is all good, cause you have heaps of talent.
Computers will take what you are riding and replicate it..but a word of warning. Every professional Shaper that I know (read Standup) knows that you cannot design with them. Once you change one increment, they will alter another one, or perhaps two. And the unknown may crucify you as a professional..a risk that I refuse to take. Even once.
They are great if you want to rough-out 20 five-tens, but I cant relate that, in any way, to kneeboarding.
And Red..your stature continues to grow. Just don't let on about the trampoline training sessions that you told me about. Guys like Headwax are starting to get onto it. Arms forward.. and then?
As always, from OZ.
PS Steen, say g'day to Simon..and tell him that Jimmy Miller and Ben Wilko from Northy miss him like hell and reckon he is still one of the best surfers they have EVER seen at Narrabeen. Not bad for the Club Captain of Northy Boardriders and the Captain of Narrabeen Sharks A-Grade Rugby League Team.

C'mon Headwax, admit you started a bad rumour. There was no trampoline involved and that was a kangaroo you saw hoppin' - the fur and tail should have been a clue (even I noticed that when I was chatting her up - tail got caught in the door - and she was a mite short). And 18 beers? Not with 5.8% Coopers. 3 maybe.
Congratulations on surfing well and winning ROB's. Interesting board. album_pic.php?pic_id=585 Still not sure about the fin placement. Intuitively I think a Bonzer setup might be the go. Have to consider what the fins are contributing. Maybe after I get a go on it.
Sophia, that was the tube of the weekend.
Steen love your work - esp. the 360 and tube in 6" shorebreak. How does a 6'4", 105kg fella make himself small enough to (almost) fit in a coverup that size?
Scoop - great photos. You've got the priorities right.
Hell it's hard to concentrate on work. Only 4 months to Tahiti - lots to learn (how did Matt Gallager manage to put 3 fins over the top of that 1' wave ? How did Baden know that set of the day was due in the open final? Should I start to surf the wave out front of my place in Port Phillip Bay - Bendy makes it look quite big and powerful)
Sophie, John (44), John C, John, Mike, Tony, Brian, Grant; Andrew, Patrick, Damo, Peter and the Novos; Brian, Cameron, AJ and all the Kiwis ..the list goes on and on - good to meet you all. That's what contest surfing is all about to me - hooting at waves, talking KS and exchanging ideas about KS, sharks, sharks, sharks, surfbreaks and boards (did I mention sharks?).
Bruce, keep on doing it just the way you have - it's working. Your boards are so good they allow me to concentrate on surfing better, rather than mundanities of getting onto waves, generating speed and overcoming rail catches. Your mental model and intuition of the interaction of bottom, rail, shape and volume is beyond what can be programmed into software. It's my job to figure out information systems that can do that sort of thing and I know there is still too much information missing about interaction of elements to build an effective automated custom shaping system.
It's important that someone experiments with the medium, so good on Kyle for taking that on. We'll have to see how computerised shaping adds to our knowledge about boards - what's functional and what does not work. New knowledge is valuable, regardless where it comes from because it allows us to refine our own ideas about the way things work (or in Andrew's case, re-evaluate our basic assumptions (LOL - Actually rolling on the floor, holding belly, howling with laughter) http://www.kneeboardsurfing.co.uk/forum ... c.php?t=29).

hi guys,
This forum is really amazing, I've read importants points of view in KB design........it's very good for us to share our experiencies, and try to push our limits.
Perhaps someone can aswer me a question. I usually order boards with 17.5 nose 22 3/4 and 17.5 assuie style tri fin (5'9) album_pic.php?pic_id=680. I've seen the picture of SantaCruz Contest logo, and that borad seems to be wider in nose dimentions. Does anybody knows something about that Kneeboard ???
I'd like to try something like that.........and try an off-the-top too
Thanks
And keep ripping..........

Nose Dimensions
Hi luizO,
I can't help with the board on the Santa Cruz logo, but I can mention that the shortboards I do in OZ all have a nose dimension that is narrower than the tail.
Like, my Summer Fish is 5' 10" x 24"..with a 17" nose and a 19" tail.
Only when I shape guns, is the nose dimension proportionately wider than the tail.
With your nose as wide as you say, yet your widest point being only 22.75", your outline is very 'nosey'..and if you want to come off the top a little quicker, I would suggest losing a little nose width, or..open your wide point a little..it will let you be a little snappier under the lip.
And is the board in the pic shaped by a kneeboard rider?

Hi Hart
My shaper is Sergio Carvalho (formar brazilian kneeboard chapion). Here in Brazil , most of kneeboards are similar ( Aussie tri). Sergio is still ripping but he is 1.70m/70kg, and I am 1.83m/81kg ,so our KBs, are a little bit diffrents. He rides 5'7 22 (I think it is small for me). My shortboard is a 5'9 (17.5 22 3/4 17.5) album_pic.php?pic_id=1175, and it is very fast in a wave like KutaReef (for sure you have a similar wave in OZ) when you can do a heavy bottom turn, it gets a excelent speed and projection.
I found a picture of a KB with a diffrent noose than mine (great outline) album_pic.php?pic_id=1130
As you said if I have a board with more tail than nose means that i have to move the widest point a bit backwards from the midle ??? I am thinking in a 5'11.........
thanks
Keep KBding

Hey luizO,
I have met Serg a number of times..say g'day for me
Yes, the widepoint would want to move back a touch..but my reply was in response to you wanting to come off the top a little quicker, which would happen with a narrower nose..
But the trade off would be less projection off the bottom..another characteristic to which you refer.
Always one thing and then the other..surfing's a lot like life itself.

To current (or prospective) Flashpoint riders:
I qualify the opening by saying I'm biased - not afraid to admit it - however, was fortunate enough to pick up my brand newie from Mr Hart last night - seventh one in the last 6 years - rocket red - 5.10 and a half - the most sensational looking thing. Took it out this morning and straight off it just went sensationally - and i know its going to get better - onya Bruce - keep up the good work. What are the other dimensions again??

Mr Xmas,
Sweating on your call all bloody day..well it was Southerly and you DO live in Bronte / Bondi..
So stoked the newie felt good..less nose and more tail for you, my friend.
Stay focussed and more will follow..you know that.
Matty (Gallagher) surfed the 5 fin today..twice..and the message confirmed that we ARE on track for Tahiti.
Right now, life is good.
Stay wet and stay amped..and thanks.
Regards, from just around the corner..but I'm glad to come to the US to hear it.
