conversion; tri to quad or quad to tri...either way

What works & what doesn't and in what type of conditions. Got a "secret" only you and your shaper know???? Post it here... we can keep it quiet ;-)

conversion; tri to quad or quad to tri...either way

ok, kneeboard basics 101...can 'one' convert any template from tri-fin to quad or vice a versa?...or does the shaper have a particular 'fin setup' in mind when shaping a particular template, board bottom, wave or rider's style preference...

game of numbers

Post by carpjaws »

so,the placement numbers just have to jive with the fin configuration and not run over each other...or can u use varying combinations?

It can all work together, plenty of people here have had boards set up to have 5 fin plugs and simply swap fin configurations.

Take a thruster rear fin, split it in half and move the halves along an arc out towards the rails. As the fins get further from the stringer, the drive characteristics change (some people claim drive increases, while others claim it decreases). Nothing else has to vary.

this board was originally a quad and converted to three fin confinguration (small middle fin)

It was the best board I've ever had, I could do really nice tail slashes with it but it would also hold really good lines because it had thin rails.

Shame I've put on so much weight over the last 10 years that I'm too heavy for it :(

mmm interesting stuff...Recently I broke out my middle fin on a nasty rock while paddling out, and apart from finding new and inventive ways to wipe-out was amazed at how quick the board felt with only 2 fins, like the proverbial cake of soap in the bathtub.

So Im toying with going for a 5fin setup on my next board, which is already cut out of the blank and leaning up against the wall waiting for me to get my mojo up for some shaping.

If anything my instinct tells me to move the back pair of fins up a tad.

cheers

Quad to 5 fin fixed my board, giving it the drive of a thruster but the looseness of a quad. I dropped in a long, Fins Unlimited center box so I could experiment with fin size/placement. I already owned a large collection of center style fins that worked in FU boxes.

of course you could always go for a nice single fin like this one (my first kneeboard!)

it didn't ride too badly if you made the drop!

It wasn't shaped perfectly and had inverse rocker, it was 50/50 whether you'd pearl on take off, if you didn't it rode really nicely!

better picture of the fin

My mate greg used to attempt to ride a McCoy single fin board, ex Pam Burridge, that had a fin just like that. Lazor Zap.
