QUADS (SCHOELKOPF vs PARKES vs BLAST)

What works & what doesn't and in what type of conditions. Got a "secret" only you and your shaper know???? Post it here... we can keep it quiet ;-)

chief

had a very very light 5'10 diamond tail tri made by the Balin standup board shaper - got lots of waves on sunday morning while some mates who had got out watched - one mate thought that my new board, a Parkes 5'10 rounded square quad with v and double concave rode slower on comparison from watching

- I like the feel and hold of the Parkes in comparison and I am still working with the turns and so forth in variable conditions to fully appreciate the board - i have had it for 9 weeks and about 16 surfs

to be honest i am yet to judge/appreciate speed difference - the tri snapped a week before the quad turned up so i was not able to directly compare - i dont feel loosness has been compromised by the quad

the board is ridden closer to the middle/front than previous board and this is taking some time to get used to in terms of working the wave top to bottom - need to understand body moves better

but the board just feels like its good and its me who needs to connect to its charms

like a woman - fun to find them

board comparison

I've a Blast 4 fin fish, and I'm also riding a Schoelkopf 4 fin round pin, but other than the length they're very different in riding characteristics, thickness, weight, and overall feel. The fin placement on the Schoelkopf is slightly more forward, and the Blast is quite a bit thicker and slightly wider. Not fair to compare them, other than to say the Blast wants to move and get loose mostly on hollow, powerful surf, and the Schoelkopf takes off on any and everything, feels very natural, and only bogs slightly in the flats (due to it's thinness, I'd assume).

I rode a big (for me) Parkes and hated it, but I only got one chance at it, and who knows what would happen if I'd stuck with it for awhile.

I could honestly say, you cant compare them, they are all made for different waves, different people's expectations of how they should perform and different styles of surfing.

To many variables involved.

Jon, you old tail rider! After the winter on my quad, I dropped it off at the factory and had a 10" FU center box routed in. Unfortunately, I missed all of that last swell since John Mel was out in the water every day and my ride was locked up!!

I'm looking forward to trying the board in a variety of configurations besides the quad (which works outrageously in under 5 foot surf but not a Sewer Peak board): thruster; five finner; and maybe a big 'ol 12" flex.

Next board is going to be in the 6'0" range but will probably go back to the double wing swallow but with my modified fin placement like I used to ride.
I'll stop by soon and show you the KB.
