Busting out fins?

and could be the reason it is failing..

i think the reason it's failing is because it's inherently a weak system. it puts all the pressure on two points instead of distributing it along the whole fin like a glass on or a future fin system. even the ones that don't break eventually start to stress out. you can see the round outlines of the plugs from the deck of the board on almost any older board with this system. it should be "FCH" for f%ckin can't handle. lol

funny thing about this thread... I hadnt busted out a fin in a long time.

Thats what I was thinking about on the way to the beach this morning...

I get to the beach and the surf is alright, about 4 foot and cleaned up tradewind swell. Nothing too great but good enough not to pass up. The crowd was pretty thick at this place (this is where I started surfing at).

It was pretty hard to catch waves, people everywhere and there were a few chicks in bikinis that would duck dive a lot (very distracting). Then on my second wave, there was this older fellow that just happen to bail his board due to the oncoming 3 foot wave I was on, the board seemed to magically find me as it ended up right under my board, I bailed off to minimize damage to find I had broken the fin, the plugs were intact thankfully. So I decided to go home, have some lunch and try it again later.

At least I wont have to fork over the 40 bucks or whatever it costs to replace plugs.

and then I went back out in the afternoon and broke another fin....

today is just not my day...

Whomever sets the fin plugs could try one of my old tricks I used when I glassed in leash cups.

I would take the end (the tang) of my rat tail file and poke holes into the foam all the way around the cut out section. When the resin is applied, the resin would fill in these 'fingers', giving the plug better holding power.

Takes a bit more time but it works.

My suggestion is to visit all or any surf shop yoou can find.They generally have a box or boxes of used fins [usually under the counter]Start collecting.

Yes..they are real good--till you shred the bottom of your board on these nasty reefs-seen them skinned right across the stringer.Expensive repair for the average KBer.thats quite a few fcs fins........
Besides,you've got friends in the business-you can afford to be opionated

Yeah, I got friends but also (unfortunately) way too many personal years in resin-saturated environments ('I don't need no stinkin' mask').

I spent many years with glass-ons but, with exeprimenting with these modern shapes, I love the felxiblity of Futures boxes. You just have to ride herd on whomever is setting the boxes.

Remember, not all glassers are created equal.
