kneeboard design body to board comparison

Post by TC »

Here is an informal poll for board disign. What size board do you ride for your all-around board (size thickness and width) How tall are you and what is your weight? I am having a new board shaped and was wondering what people where riding in comparison with there hight and weight? Thanks for any info. Cheers, TC

Well, I have this question for whoever wants to tackle it: what about George Greenough's "Velo" design? Is it a dinosaur today, or beyond the reach of the average rider? He swore on one big fin; why so many fins on kneeboards today? And, what about twin fin setups?

beeline: I do have an understanding of board shape and what I was trying to get at in the informal poll was the apparent trend from, as you put it North American traditional US styled" kneeboards to longer Aussie style boards. I am vertically impaired (short) only 147 cm/ 5'8" so if I go to a 5'10 or 6' board the use of fins to help catch waves has become much less effective. If your 6' and you ride a 6' board it is much like me riding a 5'8" which is my current board. So just trying to get some ratios of what people are using.

What I would like to get from people in this informal poll is their height, weight and what size their all-around board is. Thanks.

On another note mate leave the shame shame to my Grand Mum she is much better at it and we can talk about the local shaper topic in another post. Thanks for any response and Cheers. TC.

here's a curveball. should the board be sized for the rider? or the expected wave? i'm 6' and 200lb and in my 50's. 5'10" roundpin quad for the small stuff, 5'11" quad fish for overhead+.

5'10" 4' and under anything over 4' a board 6' works great

Hi TC

My board is 5' 10" x 22 3/4
Thickness is 2 5/8
My height is 6'
My weight is 166 pounds

The trend towards longer boards happened in the early 90s - average board lengths in the 80s were more like 5' 6" - 5' 7"

The new boards average length is 5' 10" [ I'm talking Aussie style here]
to allow them to turn they have more rocker. To stop them pushing water
& increase speed concave is often added. They also tend to be narrower to enable good rail to rail transition.

It's not essential to go longer for bigger waves - you could just have a straighter outline - a bit less width - & perhaps slightly larger fins.
My big wave board in the 80s was 5' 8"

There seems to be a move back toward slightly shorter less rockered boards now.

For the last 12 years I've been on a Parkes/Friar Tuck 5' 4" Diamond Pin - Quad Box.

Go's like a shower of shite and turns on a pin !!!
Is starting to look a little weathered (12 years) so I think I'll be ringing Dave for a new board soon (3rd Custom Parkes/Friar Tuck)
Maybe a 6' 2" Rounded Pin - Tri ???

Have to ask the Leader of the opposition (Wife) if the bank (Mortgage) can afford it ???

Oh well - Santa will be here in a few months ???
