Hi..

Heaps of guys lately have been talking about specific systems available to their local area that I haven't even heard of..

"Nothin' new in that" I reckon a few would say to me :D

..But this being my first ever (informative) thread that I've posted..

Can I pose the question..?

What is your preferred system?

8)

Given you may like glass-ons and hate systems all together?

I have word from Farrer on the OAM System tested in Hawaii and hear that FCS is about to release a new range/design..

http://www.surffcs.com/ ..is a start..

Anyone else got a link or comment to make?

hart

ps

Thanks in advance

Hey Bruiser,

Being a site virgin with this being my first post, I myself actually
preferred glass-ins. I've actually got a set out of my old board that went to G land with me and need a new home. Have you used those 20 up yet?

I've used FCS for years. Pretty reliable, the system outlasts the boards, just don't over tighten. Many templates and materials from which to choose. And other fin company's make [ like R.F.C., Rainbow Fin Co. ] fins that fit the FCS system. Tried Future Fins once and the whole fin box, fin and all, pulled out of the board on my first bottom turn. [ The glasser said it wasent his fault ]

Hi Bruce,

I don't know of any kneeboard shapers who are using this system, but it's
becoming very popular here. Shapers like Pavel, Mandella and Hynson are
now using them on their Fish designs. Rainbow fins, the distributor, has
their factory just a mile down the road from my house. 8)
Here's the link:

One of the nice features of this design is in theory the fin will snap/pop off
before the box gets pulled out of the board on impact.

PS: I see they also make an adapter that allows any FCS fin to fit their
system. Way cool!

i like the Red-X fin system that is available thru Island kneeboards.
super strong, screws thru the deck, only problem is you dont really have a huge range of kneeboard fins- i am using large retro twin fin with a larger stabliizer fin.
plus not alot shops keep them.
still cant beat FCS for range of fins
also the problem with all plastic fins is flex-unlike good old fibreglass fins
cheers

i reckon its hard to go past FCS.although i sometimes wonder whether you end up with to much choice :? .
from a travelling perspective FCS is the benchmark purely through their availability worldwide.so many people use em that even if you cant buy em local theres gonna be some one around who'll have what you want.
having said that its a f#cker trying to fix plugs as apposed to glass on fins.
especially when FCS wont sell the plugs to the general public(i spose they're looking after thier industry)
in the end i'd say FCS is the go.

20 more to go

Now Damien..

You of all people didn't have to tell me that!

and good on you for your first post..don't let it be your last. Because of our busy lives, we will probably talk more here, than we do face-to-face

Have you used those 20 up yet?

Damo
By the end of this week I will..and another 20 (blanks) have been ordered!

(one of which may have your name on it  )

You'd better get to the bar mate..it is your shout!

Thx for the link..cause this is a system that a lot of US guys have asked me about. I have sent them an email and look forward to a response (if at all)

And even FCS reckon that the fins will snap off at the lug before the plugs rip out..but I've seen so many that haven't..it just makes you wonder.

And Adam (waka) I haven't seen anyone use Redex for kneeboards because of what you say..incompatible fin shapes for kneeboards..so, is Lukey doing these in numbers that you know of?

Ross

You should have let me know who you were..Justin told me you came to PC's Memorial Gathering last weekend..good effort mate from a Central Coaster :D

footnote:

I am trying to get a link for the Futures System..radical looking fin shapes to say the least

Hey Bruce,

Here's the link to the Future's Fin's:

Another really nice system. John Mel at Freeline in Santa Cruz has been
using them for years on kneeboards.

hey bruce
yeah i came downfor the PC.it wasnt hard to pick out justin (he looks like the old man eh?).nice bunch of people at the contest.
i drew a nice little six foot twinnie in my heat(surfboard)so i rode it and as you'd expect, a kneeboarder standing up is not pretty. (in my case anyway)
the boys gave prize for standing up.
no-one i knew showed up so after a while i thought i might shoot through.
i didnt realise until i got home that i left my little single fin flex tail on the beach!so hopefully it has gone to a good home  i always thought the thing was unridable anyway. .i'll catch up with ya some other time

Jerry,

It's never anyone's fault huh? :D

Pity, cause futures seem to have some unique fin shapes/foils..

Ross

If you let me know what the single fin looked like, I'll get it back for you..

no sweat

ps

and Justin is a chip of the ol' block in many more ways than one..

Hey Bruce,

Just saw the new FCS plug in Puerto Rico. Looks like an improved geometric shape to increase surface (contact) area and should be stronger. They were on the board of a guy in the group who glasses for a builder out of San Diego, so don't know if they are on the general market yet.

I recently had a fracture on the outside of one of my drive fin plugs after hitting something hard enough to put 1/4" gash in the fin. The plug held and was a simple fix plus I had the screws dogged.

The Flashpoint got plenty of attention in PR and went well. Will send some pictures after I get a chance to do some editing.

What's not working for me are FCS fins. I lost yet another box last week. Of course, the fin went with it.

This was the same board, other front fin from what happened in November... which started in August with just a fin lost. John Mel's long-time construction guru repaired that one... and I'm happy to say, and to his credit, it has not been the weak link, even if he kept trying to say it could be.

The frame of the box itself broke. I may be hard on my equipment, but... look at Jerry's post. He's doing just fine in unarguably strong surf.

It may be a rider size issue. It may be a glasser issue. It may be a combination. It may be bad luck. What it translates to is lost time and money.

Don just refitted his board from FCS to Futures. The cost of materials alone was $60. He had the advantage of having a knowledgeable buddy help in the replacement. Going from one to the other at retail prices is $$$.

Point of this post...
- Don't have an answer, wish I did.
- FCS isn't working for me.
- If this thread comes up with an answer, I'll be darn sure to push that solution back. I'd rather pay for an ounce of prevention than a pound of cure.

Cheers all!

I hear you Bob. I had nothing but bad luck with FCS. The plugs always pulled out of the bottom of the board.
Eric Schoelkoph made the switch to Futures and I have not had any problems since.
I am interested in the Lockbox system. It looks storng and has built in adjustability. Plus they're made here in San Diego.

How do you describe the box?

..these are the 'individual' plugs you are talking about, right?

I say this because there is an unauthentic 'FCS' type system on the market here in OZ and I'd hate it to be mistaken for the real McCoy..and it resembles a box rather than two seperate plugs.

I hope this thread can come up with the answer..

good response(s) so far by all
