Fin size

Post by munchauzen »

Hi guys
Been trying to kneeboard for past 18 months Always intrigued by fin size and effects on speed and turns. I have FCS G6 fins as outers and smaller central fibreglass in fin box. I ride a 6ft4 Kneeon board. What effect do larger outside fins produce? I there any use to put larger central fin in place???

What effect do larger outside fins produce?
In my experience larger outside fins (particularly more base) on a thruster prevent the board getting up on rail as easily. This can result in the board not turning efficiently off the rail/rocker combination. The end result is a feeling that the board is "tripping over itself". Actually I think it's the outside fin locking up the turn. It feels as though the rear fin is too big because the board won't come round properly.

Most people correct this by decreasing the rear fin. This just decreases drive and lets the tail hop out of the water.

I've yet to find a better FCS rail fin than the AMs whether it is 1' or 10'. (I think this has more to do with the foiling in the tip than the size of the fin, though) One AM in the water (and a lot of rail) is more than enough for driving bottom turns (you don't need any fins in the water for top turns ) :o
