KNEEBOARD SHAPING APPRENTICESHIP-2006

Post by hart »

:D

This topic has been raised a number of times on many different threads/ topics

I have had PM's from International surfers on this as well as phone calls (+ emails) from local guys..

Lots of interest about

(I guess)

"Where is the next generation going to come from and who will be there to help?"

There is a genuine renaissance occuring in kneeboarding right now..we can all feel it

It IS happening 8)

From my perspective ?

Around 3 months ago a surfer from the Central Coast NSW offered to give a couple of boards to ksusa..and with the help of Ed Quinn (the Super EQ) the boards landed in the US for free

:!:

This kneeboarder had shaped them himself..as he has done for quite a while. This guy is a Carpenter, by Trade

I was taken enormously by his generosity, ability, his attitude and his integrity..

So, I offered him an experience

Ross Dillon is now working with hartdesign to produce kneeboards for Flashpoint Surfing and all that it requires to create custom-built surfcraft for the local AND international kneeboarding community

..and there's much more than just shaping, huh?

I am totally stoked with the direction that I have taken so far..and of the direction that I believe it holds, for the future

congratulations Ross

and good on you Hart

carrying on the Fitz tradition, eh?

I never believed what the other blokes said - I always knew deep down that you were ok.

and renaissance - a rebirth, a re-emergence, almost a knee-o-naissance -

life is good

Yep, that's the way to go.
Good to hear.
As a recent blow-in here, I've lately been sifting through the board gallery and have stumbled across a few of Ross' s shapes that looked pretty decent.
(plus he's from the Central Coast)

MR HART: I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU!

The beloved blue bottle...the board you shaped that okay-tony had, and then Mark Wessling had, and now I have thanks to those two passing on the stoke: IT LOST A SIDE FIN BOX TODAY. Mushburgers in the seal beach boat channel were all that were going on, but I had a drop in by a fucking kook, and I shot my board at him. Bad idea. I kept surfing for another hour, but when I got back to shore, I noticed one of the side fins was out; I'd been surfing with an asymetrical fin setup for about an hour. ARRRRGGGH...Mark put in a center box, so do I move the center box fin back almost all the way and ride it as a single, or do I pay for the repair? I don't mind losing a bit of functinality (IE, riding it as a single), I'm just learning and its my first dedicated kneeboard.

Anyhow, if you could let me know that would be great...&

I'm really excited about the fact that you are passing along your knowledge to the next generation! Stoked!

good on ya man.

thanks.

Bruce, is Ross any relation to Scott Dillon :?: I had a Scott Dillon surfboard back around 1965 that I know came from Oz.

I didn't build that board with any finboxes..I used a Sydney-based fin system and I can remember Man-o-War telling me he changed things around

So I can't give you any accurate advice..except

Do whatever you can, to keep it and you in the water :D :D

Jerry

Ross' old man is a kneeboarder..but no relation to Scott Dillion.

So he comes with pedigree even 8)

HW

Terry Fitzgerald was responsible for Steve Artis' professional shaping career as he was with Albert Whiteman's following Steve's defection to McGrigor's (to concentrate on Earthrise c 1979)

When Albert left Sydney for Ulladulla, TF offered me his kneeboard shaping bay and we jointly did HB/ FLASHPOINT kneeboards for quite some time

If it weren't for the professional shaping opportunities that Chris Crozier (1978) John Fleck + Barry Bennett (80's-90's) and Terry Fitzgerald (1987 +) had offered me, there is no way that my work would reflect what it does now

Ross' learning curve is a very steep one..and so far, he's hangin' on with every bit of 40 grit, he can :!:

To all other posters

Thanks for the support

No worries mate...I'll just ride it as a single for awhile! Then when I get enough money from my job at school and figure out dimensions, maybe...a new...flashpoint? Yeaaah! We'll see...but it could be in the cards if you guys have decent shipping rates (do you do shipping w/ ksusa?).

Bruce
It sure was fun working with you when I got back into shaping. I know your wisdom and experience will get Ross on the road to great shapes and his own style. You are a lucky fellow Ross. Jon

ah so my true(more like new) identity has been revealed.

thanks for your kind words and support.

its been a nervous and exciting few months for me as you would imagine.

Certainly an eye opening experience. The level of professionalism i have been witness to over the last few months is mindblowing. Not to mention actually riding the results of my "newfound" knowledge.

we can all see from the posts above that Bruce hails from a bloody impressive family tree of shapers and from a learning point of veiw there is no better foundation than that. 8)

i'm so appreciative for the oppurtunity and hope that one day i can be a member of that family tree. :D

can't wait for tomorrow 8)
