Fish riders twin or quad

What works & what doesn't and in what type of conditions. Got a "secret" only you and your shaper know???? Post it here... we can keep it quiet ;-)

Fish riders twin or quad

Post by tsenn »

I'm getting a new board made. For those of you that ride a fish, what do you think? Twin fin or quad fin. I pretty much just kneeboard when it's hollow, fast , and glassy, and am an old rail grabber! thanks

TSENN, either design will be great. Just make sure you get some rocker in it for the steep, hollow waves. Don't get a flat board. Try and find a good deal, Quads are more modern, so you might get a better deal on the quad. I own a Blast quad, and it goes better than my old twin fins in the 70's. But if I didn't know about the quads, my old Carl Hayward twin would have been great enough.

Tsenn, I surfed nothing but twin keel fishes fo many years then switched to quads in the 90's. A few years back I got back on a twin keel again and fell in love with it all over again. Those boards have a certain feel that works great for me. If at all possible I recommend you borrow and try both setups several times. Don't expect it to go perfect your first session on one. My first two sessions on a fish were complete disasters, third time was a charm and you couldn't get me away from it. For many people the twin keel feels too stiff and a quad may be more versatile. Also worth noting is that probably most guys that are fish riders are now riding quads. Whatever you decide I recommend getting it from a shaper that has been shaping fishes for a long while as in this retro era lots of people are on the fish bandwagon and some are not good as others.

On the twin v quad question I guess I would have to ask you what you are wanting the board to do? Is it going to be an everyday board, or for a particular type of wave? How tall and heavy are you?

I ride both types of fish. I have quad fish that I think are great everyday boards because they will hold, but you can free the fins in turns, and surf vertically. My twin fish are more point and shoot boards but also work in not so good surf.

Personally I love the design and feel that with a quad for everyday surf and a twin for bigger hollow fast surf you could have a great two board quiver. PM me with any questions.

I ride a 5’8” Freeline fish quad and agree with Paul’s statements. I love the way that the quad hangs in on bigger surf/winter surf, but being a Dad on a budget I need to adapt 1 board to many uses. To this end I just pull the back fins in summer and have a fine forward twin or use my second set of small fins in medium summer surf. The board works well in either situation so I have been very happy with it. Cheers, TC

Saw several setups on kauai, with this fin system.Riders said the instability common with twins, was negated.Said the feeling was definately ''twin''but more stable and drivey
They were standups..don't know how the transition to KB would work.Might be worth a try for the bold ones[with extra cash]

Is it possible/advisible to remove the trailing fins of a quad and uses just the forward fins as a twin? I have FCS system--will these plugs hold up with a twin fin set up?
Wouldn't mind switching from twin to quad (and vice versa), just to feel the difference.

Mik, Larry Mabile in San Diego (shaper for KG, Swift, etc.) uses a 3 plug FCS setup for keel fins that works fine. If you add plugs to your board to use keels you'll want to position them so that the trailing edge of the keel is about the same position as the trailing edge of your back quad fin.
