headwax-thanks for posting that artical from tracks. The Aipa's that I had were some of the best boards that I had in the 70's ,but I'd never seen a twin stinger from that era, only single fins here in cali.....
We experimented with stinger kneeboards/surfboards in the at Freeline Design. I rode them with a 12" flex fin in a long box that we constructed by taking two regular boxes ( before the advent of the longer box), cut off an end on each boxe then glassesd them in, opening end to open end.
The relationship of fin to stinger nmade the board work.
Someday I'll tell the story of doing a cutback on my sting/wing 8'2" and laying a wall of water on Aipa.
I just posted a pic of my first custom board I had made (in board album). Stinger swallow and 5' 3'. I still have it and the guys in O`side have seen me ride it a few times.
I don`t understand "fin to stinger relationship" idea. My board had a box in it and the biggest fin I ever put in it maybe 8". Then whan I saw the Velzey butterfly fin, I bought one and that was the last fin I ever put it. So I don`t understand the need for a 12" fin. I know everyone is different, so don`t mean any harm here.
On the 8'2", I ran the front wing at 22" from the tail and the back wing at 14". I placed the middle of the flex fin at the back wing. Made the board really pop around.
John Mel/Freeline made the baord for me and he dubbed it the"Topanga Tangler". As a kneeboarder, I was a dangerous stand-up......still am !
