Hi I have been lurking around the site for a while - I have never kb'ed before but have surfed for almost 30 years - I always liked watching the kneelos, not as many around now as before ?
I am looking for a kneeboard for my older brother - he has tried surfing a few times never really got up or anything. He asked about getting a KB.
So I am asking for a little input on what would be a good KB for a beginner 48 YO, 5'11 200 lb, surfing waves up to about 6-7 foot max. (East Coast US mostly)
I have been watching the Used Boards forum and haven't been able to find what I thought would be a good one for him.
I'm guessing about a 6'0 (+/-) 2" about 23 W, 2 3/4 Thick, quad with a fin system so he can take em out if he travels with us. how does that sound?
I was thinking J Mel, Bud Mc Cray or possibly Dean Cleary would be a good place to start to order.
Any input from you experienced kneelos? What makes a good board to learn on, should I try a local shaper who does a lot of stand up boards but few KB's?
Or anybody got a good beginner board ?
Thanks for any help
Jim

I found the romonovky site was very informative regarding size & weight of rider & surf conditions so did a mate of mine so much so he had one custom made and shiped over here to australia. I've been riding tucks and parkes style boards for years, my latest isn't, but similar to his quad 5'10" fish tail but it's 5'8" x 23" x2 3/4 old style tuck quad with thruster plugs as well, it has a lot of volume so its easy to paddle & i'm 90kg i'm not sure what that converts to in lbs but it 's fast loose as a quad not so loose with a small trailer and is awsome in 4' plus walls with the standard trailer. my mates romonovsky is 5'8" as well it paddles well too but i found it too tight,in small sloppy waves, in larger walls it would be fantastic but unfortunatley our conditions over here vary too much.
I hope i've helped
ps my latest is on my profile if want to check it out
