Just finished shaping my first board!!!!! First thing I've built out of wood in 22yrs!!!! (last thing was a spice rack for my Mom when I was 11!!!!!) Unfortunately its a stand-up, but at 20" wide I think it'll be getting some knee action as well....

Next week I start a kneeboard (as soon as I figure out how to cut 1/8 inch planks out of a 3inch board!!!!!!!!)

I'm impressed!! I know Tomway and I would like to know the wood you used, your rocker plane, the thickness of the skin,1/8"?, the over all thickness and final weight. This was obviously well thought out and deserves proper documentation. Keep it away from rocks and your young studs like Chris. Jon

Seriously beautiful work CC.

cheers guys..... i'm pretty stoked..... busy psyching myself up to de-face it with wax and take is for a surf!!!!

Jon.... was a bit of a cop-out as it was a Grain kit, so the rocker shape was pre-done and I had instructions to follow..... my usual job is a pencil pusher behind a desk, so needed some directions to follow as I ain't no craftsman!!!!!

Wood is Cedar and is 1/4 inch all around..... didn't realise I could take it down thinner until too far into the process. Has a 4oz glass coat with a gloss coat and 3 layers of PU varnish for UV protection. Final weight is 13.1 pounds (5.9kgs).

Am busy starting a kneeboard by taking a copy of one of my existing boards and building it from the rails in.... per Tomways method..... still trying to figure out how to get a template for the rail rocker though!!!!

Not 100% sure on the wood I'll use, but heading towards a mixture of cork, redwood and possibly poplar for the rails and poplar and redwood for the skins (mainly cause that seems to be easily availble pre-cut wood and a lumber yard is like a trip to Mars for me!!).... hopefully get them down to 1/8 inch for board no.2...... still in the planning stages and its hurting my brain!!!!!

CC Lookin' good!! much better in the daylight(looked awesome in twilght) as opposed trying to critique it under PCH lights(no critical points then ,none now) at the bu a few weeks back at sunset(honored you chose to share the stoke and sesh that night) and with the fins in you must be amped to get it in the water!!! I can help you with the rocker stick-worked out a methodology with a sheet of stainless 318L and a length of unistrut with a bunch of alltread with fasteners --probably a pic would be better or better yet I am doing county tommorow(ventura/oxnard calls) a bit of NW in the water(malibu sucked this evening BTW-better yesterday...)
Peace
Kevin

Wow! Looks brilliant Peter :) :) So stoked to see these pictures!

What are the fin plugs inserted into? I've always done glass ons, but often though about boxing in some pour foam in the tail for fin plugs. Is that what you did?

Working outside in (rails first) is a real headache at the planning stage, isn't it?! :? Much easier if you have a board to model your rocker on. When working out the rocker I need to build into my rails, I run a piece of thread along the rail of my model board. That way I can measure the rocker in the centre of the board at say 6" from the nose, draw a perpendicular line out from the stringer of my model board to the rail and use the string to work out the distance along the rail from the nose at the corresponding point. I immediately transfer this measurement to a piece of 1/8" hardboard/mdf to make a rocker template and repeat for 1' from the nose and so on. When the 'rail-rocker' template is finished, I just lay it on my laminated rail stock and run a router round it.

Alternatively, I would find out where Jon Manss lives and go and knock on his door clutching all your bits of wood, a pencil and an empty notebook :)

One note on using thin stock for your deck skins. I've found that to make the decks solid enough you need to introduce curves in your deck. Flat decks will let the skins flex too much. I roll my decks which isn't really ideal for kneeboards, but by this also allows me to use less wood in the rails which is where most of the weight seems to build up.

Hope you get out to Indo again soon with one of these... would be great to take a clutch of them to some more out of the way spots for testing :D

Tom,

Cheers for the advice.... that sounds pretty much along the lines my brain was heading towards when it broke down!!!!! Will try that method for the rail rocker!!!...... need to remember what all the tools do...... forgot about the router..... was thinking i'd need to use a bandsaw and plane!!!!

Fin plugs have 1 inch square cedar blocks mounted inside the deck to drill the holes into....... means you have to measure out the fin placement before you put the deck on and finish the shape and can lead to slightly out measurements (in my world)!!! Not good when you drill through into fresh air!!!!! Bit of epoxy gel worked a treat for fixing the errors though.

Indo's only a relatively short hop from Sydney, so I'm pretty darn sure I'll be back in the next year or so!!!!

killer stick CC,

is a Hollow wooden surfboard considered a compsand? or is that a term only for sandwich construction?

the grain paipo looks really cool as does the lis-like fish...

id love to make a rasta compsand fish with exotic woods like african cherry ,bamboo and redwood. and inlay it with abalone and agave...be so 8) ...

one day ill try this , but i gotta get the vacuum bag dialed in first...

how many hours do you have in this build?

skansand... cheers bru

no idea about compsand or sandwich construction.... just glue and clamps!!!!
also thought about doing an inlay..... but it looks too easy to f-up!!!! ended up burning in the design with a soldering iron..... 3hrs and 4 burns later!!

can't rember how many hours it took.... good few though.... wouldn't be surprised if I clear 20hrs at least seeing as i had to learn everthing from scratch.... my uncles helpfull words were "you'll figure it out, best way to learn"!!! plus who knows how many hours watching glue dry.... enthrawling that!!!!
