The bigger rider!

Post by Slasher »

Hi from South Australia, Need some help in getting information regarding a new board for those of us bigger in frame! would like to pick your brains as to shape, size, thickness and width? I weigh 110 kgs and want some help getting a board shaped that will not only float me but will allow me to turn and paddle easier !!
I'm not asking for too much am I........?......Na

not asking for too much but we are all different and there may not be one single answer for you
the waves you surf will also be a big influence on the style of board
I'm not familliar with SA but tell us which breaks and what size waves you are aiming at
... quad or tri and what part of the wave do you like to hang in or on
8)

I'm not as heavy as you but here are my boards
http://www.diyfactory.com/surf/Kev01.htm

the Neil Like Freak ... third board down was owned by a fellow around your weight
he surfs the Vic west coast
mostly point and reef breaks
and finds a board this size floats him fine

The two newer boards where made recently by Dave P and I wanted to try more float and to experiment with Fin arrangements

The newest board at the top is very floaty ... I've taken to calling it the FatBoy

in conditions that require many duck dives it is probably too floaty and in choppy conditions it can be hard to sit on
I haven't yet had it in the small conditions it was made for
so I can't say for sure that it is too fat
The flat rocker is very fast and can make for a difficult turn ... I like it as a Quad

the Second board is a very good all-rounder and I seem to like it as a Tri

Dr Red likes to talk a little about volume ... in litres
he likes 30 ... ish and seem to wants to get even smaller
and I seem to like high 30 and perhaps over 40 litres
he likes narrow 22 to 23
I seem to like 23 to 24

very broad starting point
6' to 6'2"
22 3/4 through to 24 wide
2 1/2" for thin and I think more like 2 3/4" through to 3 inch thick

IF you are ever in Victoria ... you are welcome to try any of them

Cheers Kev
I personally surf beachies dare i say Middleton !! Jewel of South Oz ....not! and waites and Parsons when it's not too crowded. They are a mixture of point at Parsons and beachies at Waites. 4-6 ft at most
I tend to get dredged down at time due to my weight i ride a 6ft 4 Kneeon 23 1/2 i think thruster 2 3/4 thick. i just want a good shaped board for all round use ! I know it can change vastly due to different conditions but funds being limited i want something that will make me more bouyant and manoverable in 2-6ft surf
I think I may be asking for too much lol
I have a mate Phil in SA who is trying his hand at shaping and he's willing to shape one for me so i was just trying to get some idea!
he's shaped two boards and the owners are very happy with the results so far
anyway cheers Slasher SKA member

then I'd say something like the second board on my page
with less Vee in the tail if you like cleaner conditions

having more fin rearward and a hull that lifts (concave) may help to project you forward instead of dredged down or sliding

the rocker shape may need a little more local knowledge to be sure
flat is good for projection and run but tail rocker can help to hang in the pocket

ride as many boards as you can before making extreme choices

G'day Slash
Dribbleton eh? Probably see you out there one day.
Got 2 sweet rides from Dave Parkes,1 X singlefin diamond tail & 1 X quad fish. Only trouble is Dave surfs in good quality more powerful waves than we have on the mid (esp in summer) so his boards are a bit thinner with more rocker - go great in winter time but stall a bit during this time of year.

So - Rick & Mark at Mid Coast Surf are making a KB for good ol' South Oz summer gutless slop. After 5 min talking to Rick about shapes, what you want and need etc you'll be amazed at his wealth of knowledge and as they also make clubbie mal's etc blnks to suit aren't a problem.

You can also look at http://www.ska.org.au/
sure Pinebox'll happily have a chat and make some suggestions.

but Dave ... or any shaper ... can give you what ever rocker you ask for
he makes board for people in all states and for overseas fellows

my FatBoy board is very flat and was made for small waves on the Sunshine Coast beaches

the hardest thing is to work out what you want/need and then comunicate that to your chosen shaper

get a ride on a variety of boards and then hone in on what you want

Kev - mate - you've obviously never surfed the mid in Adelaide during summer. Any board shorter than 10ft I reckon struggles to stay afloat

the dimensions to my boards are at
http://www.diyfactory.com/surf/Kev01.htm

the Neil Luke Freak is Dane's old board and he is your size
his current boards are simillar
one Quad and one Tri

The yellow Fat Boy is probably too much float
even for you

The orange board is a good start for a floater

100Kg

Post by Bob »

I am 250lbs.. I do not know how many Kg that is. Kg X 2.2 = lbs.???

I always go wider before I go thicker on a board. Lately, I have been adding foam to the stringer for a blockier tail for mushy surf. Thinner rails make the board turn better, especially backside. Foam on stringer gives float over flat sections.

Hope this helps.
