Dale Ponsford Screwdriver tails...

Post by Bryn »

Hi all,

I'm really interested in Dale Ponsfords screwdriver tails to the point of wanting a crack at building one but i'm finding it very difficult to find any info or pics other than the odd one on this site (sure there was a close up shot of 2 of his boards fairly recently, think Waka took them? Can't find them anywhere!). Does anyone know how to contact Dale (does he do email?) or could anyone that rides them shed a bit more light in terms of bottom contours/rails/rocker and fin placement? I guess some of it is pretty specific to the tail shape and I don't want to steal but a basic understanding and some more info would be great.

Cheers
Bryn

HYya Bryn

Hope you are travelling well.

Guy in our novos was riding one when he joined a few years ago.

he was a good surfer, pretty dynamic. His board went well but everynow and then he would lose it.

Appeared the tail would go into a slide at certain point, when he didn't put enough pressure on it. I think at times the reverse curl was holding part of the tail rail out of the water so it would pop then hydrofoil sideways suddenly.

Just my observation. I didn't talk to him about it.

He doesn't ride it at the moment I think.

let us know how you go

cheers

screwdriver tails?

Post by frankfqr »

Interesting deduction and observation Mr. Wax. On theory alone it seems the pronounced extension and channel on top of the rail would enhance the hold or sinking of the tail upon solid engagement. Tail on this example seems abit thick for that, but, I value your insight

Hi Frank.

Long time no chat! :(. Hope you are getting waves.

I remember seeing Rodney ball (mid to late 70's ?) holding a much longer example (?) in tracks magazine which looked like it was the bees knees. Maybe it was - with a single fin all the way back?

The channel on top of the rail looks like a good idea
Item today in paper, local kid invents surfboard with detachable tail (50% of board is tail). Idea: drive down the beach with a whole set of tails and one front end. Choose tail to suit surf.

Might be good for a screwdriver tail? :)

have a happy Chrissie!

(PS a little of what I'm upto )

I know a few guys around here that surf them and they seem too go well for them, notably Greg Andrews and Damien Coase.I surf with Greg alot and can honestly say ive never seen him have his tail pop out on him.Actually the reverse seems to alow him some very late bottom turns, without losing speed.I think they are definitly suited to someone who surfs off the tail.Greg is currently waiting for a newy Dale is doing so when it arrives i will take some pics and post.
