KSUSA Designed Board Round 2...this time build your own

Post by sf_firestarter »

A couple of years ago I asked for help from the community with designing my new kneeboard. I love the board but have essentially beat it beyond repair so now it's time for a replacement. This time I want to build my own. A copy of the KSUSA designed board but with one change a heavier glass job. What's everybody else using on the stronger side?

I'm also looking for suggestions to get me going on the shaping side. I've never shaped or glassed a full board before but I've done plenty of repair work as evidensed by my current boards.

the Shaping and Glassing 101 DVDs are worth a look
this will show the tools and methods and generally help fill in the gaps

it's not something I've done ... yet
but it is on the list of things to do
good luck 8)

usual glass, but dont put it in a board bag

let it bake and cook in the car

and repeat DO NOT PUT IT IN A BOARD BAG

Result = a strong yet flexible not brittle board

How do I know?

Experimenting with demented themes and concepts

I've always let my glass jobs cure up to three weeks. Used to put a new kb in the hot water heater closet at my Mom's house for a week or so. I also glass my boards on the heavy side. 2 full layers on the deck (4 & 6), a 3/4 4 oz deck patch then long ovals of 3oz where my knee/lower leg impact.

glass will be 6oz bottom 6oz + 4oz top and a patch...the patch may be in carbon fiber as I've got some extra unidirectional cloth.

it's underway. I'm starting with a US Blanks 6'2"x23"x3" fish blank. I cut the template to 6'x22.5" with swallow tail.

rocker???? flat spots

Post by sf_firestarter »

I'm a bit stumped on the rocker and modifying the rocker already in the blank. My current board I thought used the same blank but it has a flatter section of about 16inches under the knees and then more rocker closer to the tail.

What does the rocker look like on others boards? Do most kneeboards have a flat area under the knees?

I have nothing for reference except for my own and some stand up fishes. The fishes have no flat area in the center but are much flatter towards the tail.

Any help would be appreciated.

Now you've opened a can of worms! Guess it's not covered in the video? Straight edge, tape measure, keen eye and smooth transitions needed. I'm in Santa Cruz and a trip up to the city for surf and assistance in any phase of board building is no big deal. We could knock it all out in a day. PM if needed.Frank.
