Getting picked off deep in the barrel.

I use the fully upright position when I'm throwing myself up the face.

please do not let this turn into a fins fwd. or back debate. i surf very upright (off my haunches) and i ride fins back .it seems like stand up surfing to some extent, if you look at pictures of the better fins fwd guys most of them ride low and use that to drive them, and if you check out photos of those of us that ride romos or some other fins back board we ride more upright more like the standups. this is just my observation and i,m sure there are many differing views out there. most of all do what feels right and have fun doing it. :D

Look at the pictures of Max and then just do whatever it is he does. It will all work out fine!

c'mon Max....you're taking all of the fun out of our little forum if we can't argue about tris vs quads, fins forward or back, flippers or no
i think if you put your knees too far forward with a upright style it can be awkward. i have a very upright/standup style but i've really tried to lean forward the last few years and it really helps...especially through turns.
i think my Blast boards fin setup is somewhat between the Aussie and Romo setup and this supports both upright and low crouching styles....for me at least. 8)

I lean forward in my head but in photos I'm upright. Since everything is in my head the reality is I lean forward.

There is a huge difference in "upright style sitting on heels" and "upright style kneeling up, almost like standing on knees".

To me, the most stylish surfers surf low or surf kneeliing up but they always have their butt off their heels. Having the butt on the heels seems to kill all speed and especially that speed gained out of turns.

Just my thoughts, for what they are worth.

It depends on the board. (Sorry Max, but that's exactly what it is.)

If your board is shorter, or has it's fins further back, it won't effect you at all. In fact, the board is probably harder to turn if you lean forward since you are leaning away from the pivot point. (The Fins)

If your board is longer, with your fins forward, it will greatly effect you.
The board will feel too loose and will be hard to control and your turns will be all over the place. You'll start putting your arms out to balance, since you are not low enough to balance with your base.
Leaning forward allows you a lower center of gravity and wider base, drawing your arms in and giving you all your control and power. It allows you to attack and drive into your turns maintaining all of your speed:

Bob- You are right on with those statements.

And one of the main reason guys "can't ride" newer models is only due to body position. If you lean back or sit on your heels, it's over.

But as Max said, go out and get wet... if your smiling, you're doing it right.

i can be really upright riding my 6'5 tri too....i think it has alot to do with tail width and foil....

Hey Jackson
I kneel upright and in recent photos I have only my bent toes ( knees too) on the board not the top of my flipperless feet.

I use my body position to pump and drive the board move up and down.

Anyway that works is good

actually the perception is in our head but the reality is different...which is why we walk around (surf around) thinking one thing whilst the truth is often completely different.

If my thoughts were reality, id hate to think of the damage i have thought up (created)let alone acted upon. If reality is thinking why cant I think up a better world....merely through thought alone?

coming to realise (realize) thoughts are the opposite to reality one attempts to do away them.....then whether one is an atheist or a believer it does not matter....one is thought free, concentrates better and is more often at/in peace.

JDC, are you saying there is such a thing as objective truth?

Sure sounds like it.

Not trying to start anything, just wondering.

now I'm confused

objective truth
subjective truth

objective results lead to proof of premise
isn't objective truth easier to prove ?

 d'oh
now I've confused myself

hey fooj

would never think you trying to start something other than responding to a post as I did :D

an objective truth falls under the mode known as "conventional reality"

so as a way of dealing with people on an every day level I will generally suggest objective is more reasonable than subjective.

Ultimately, objective and subjective modes of dealing with the world are mere concepts, just thoughts. Thoughts come and go

the space between two thoughts is an interesting area of investigation.

cheers
