I agree Grayman, Octoblades are the best and you can buy them off the Hot Buttered website. I don't find I need to cut them down though.

I'm riding quite a tapered pintail and had overhang. Never used to bother but really noticed the difference since making sure the fins are flush to the rail.

Still, we wouldn't have the fish were it not for overhang.

Throw out the ballast!

Barry has all sorts of examples...

Here's a SFK example for going '5-fin:'

Depends on the fins though. I know people with Churchills who've still had overhand so have worn them on the wrong feet.

Didn't understand the Kookland bit.

And nobody even mentioned Uncle Fester ...

Hey G-man, isn't the opposite of "overhand" "underhand"?

Hey SFK, far out shot brother! Looks like you're halfway to transcending the board altogether.

If your flippers hangin over the rail are slowin' you down that much -
maybe it's your board that's too slow to begin with...

Perhaps.

Bro Diplock makes my boards and he's not renowned for making craft which are "too slow..."

Alternatively, if you went to pick up your new board and there were a couple of fat lumps of rubber stuck on the rails near the tail, you'd probably be asking a few questions!

It's not about slowing, it's about turning. My personal experience is that on more gutsy surf having an overhang starts to mess with the flow of water around the rail. Perhaps that's why so many of the top riders go without fins (plus the alledged "getting more feeling from the board").

Personally, I have no experience of going finless cause it's very hard work!!!

Still, all I know is that I get a better response from my board without overhang than with.

Now we've talking! The wet pillow is second only to riding kneelo! Looks like I'm kookin too!

We had this discussion on the UK site which may help:

Gotta agree with Max on this one, fer sure.

If your fins are creating drag at the Wedge...the Wedge will certainly take care of it for you.

It'll suck 'em off your feet as it deposits you (neck first) onto the sand.

Then perhaps they don't overhang?

I'd have thought the laws of physics dictate that hanging a fin over the edge of the rail effectively alters the shape of the rail?!

I always thought trimming fins was fairly standard practice TBH.

Don't wanna make a big deal of it though.

Each to there own.

GM,

There's a lot of splitting hairs, and some fins, or was that flippers, going on.

Those are thoughtful responses.

I'll go back to staring at my navel now.
