What works & what doesn't and in what type of conditions. Got a "secret" only you and your shaper know???? Post it here... we can keep it quiet ;-)

Feedback on deck pads

Post by PAINTERMAN »

The topic of deck pads has probably been beat to death, but I've never used them. While checking the web page I've seen casey, blast, nivhi, native & cove. Any and all feedback welcomed.
Thx to all.

They all work well. The bonus being a bit of cushion between the board and the knees, which need protection;knee problems are no fun. Also wetsuit knee pads last longer.
And less screwing around with wax, which to me is a pain in the arse. Some seem to like the wax deal.Different strokes......

cheers

I am strongly in favor of rear deck pads as these reduce the damage to the deck during duck diving that is caused by your knee.

hey Painterman,

I'm of the "no pad" persuasion, but I won't dissuade anyone who wants to use 'em. To me, it's kinda like surfing on stilts, if that makes any sense...but it's amazing what we get used to.

I'm sure all the pads named here are excellent pads, I just wanted to throw out another excellent option: Pendo pads. They are installed during the actual fabrication of the board, so the pad lays flush with the deck.

Do a search on Mollusk Surf Shop in OBSF, I think they may still have a few Pendo's laying around. Also do searches on Swaylock's and a couple of other surfing / shaping sites.

Painterman, I don't use pads either, but I have in the past a couple times. Pendo pads are also available here in San Diego by Steve Pendarvis, a one-time Lounge crew member, and pretty nice guy! 8) He's at www.pendo.com. In the late 80's Rich Pavel put a wibulator into my entire deck so the whole board would flex. (Boooiiinggggg).

Yeah man. Got one put on one of my boards even after established knee wells. Works great. Plenty of grip and cushiness, but don't feel like I'm three feet above my board.

All good. Just different. Have used two, recently. Bud's Blast pads are the hardest and least expensive. Parkes are good but more expensive.
Both are easy to put on. Do not know which would be better in warm water with no wetsuit.

I wax the Blast pads but do not wax the Parkes pads.
