Q1. soon to take possesion of near new parkes quad 5'10 rounded square pin and thought id relagate 10 year old trifin 5'10 diamond pin to small wave bash board by taking away small fin thus turning board into twin fin - will the board be looser or just thrown out design kilter. Any thoughts anyone?

Q2. have read a lot of conflicting (to me) senarios on board performance - what would the general strengths and weaknesses of the above mentioned parkes board be. would love to hear from a 5'10 quad fin rounded square pin rider.

cheers

I have a very small old school retro design thruster with huge side fins and a small center fin. If I take out the center fin, the board will be ridiculously loose. However I do have a theory that it will be this loose because I have grown accustomed to having a fin in the center so much that when one is not there it throws me off.

Then again I can't seem to have ever been able to ride a quad effectively...

You should check some of the posts in 'The Quad Question', I know there are a lot, but amongs some of it there is some really good insight into the difference between quads and other types of fin setups.

Hope this helps
Albert

In ref to Q1 it will make it a lot looser, but you can achieve the same thing ( and keep it asa Tri Fin) if you have FCS or similar system. I use the following setup for small crappy conditions. The rail fins are TF1's and the trailer fin is a GS and it works a treat. For larger surf I just change the trailer fin to a GYU fin.

Thanks Kneelo 44 and Albert

My fins are glassesd in so to sand it off is sort of permanent. Super loose might be fun for refining balance

I have read the quad question reviews - this caused me a degree of confusion.
One said parkes quads are loose like a twin fin but need to be ridden weight foward - which suits my style - but others suggest quads are for parallel approach so the idea of being like a like twin fin looses weight.

Given also the debate is further confused (to me) by the intent of the shapers - a Blast is different to a parkes - I am still interested in parkes 5'10" quad fin rounded squaretail riders specifically or as close to - inspiring me with tails of verticality and their body position to achieve this.

I organised the board before I discovered this web site so I have been sufring in a knowledge vacum were the only thing to go on was that local shaper Michael Di of strapper Torquay is still doing mostly twin fins with a square stand up board type tail

As my kneeboard is a Balin - a few kneelos on the Mornington Peninsula ride them but not kneelo specific shaper, I figure that a kneeboard shaped by a renowned kneelo will provide me with more than this 10 year old Balin from a prodominately stand up shaper

I must say, to all who read this, its quite unbelievable the difference in my approach and surfing sessions after three weeks of being glued to this website! My surf buddies recently tried to talk me into long boarding as is the ageing habit - this site has made me glad I stuck to my guns

I will go custom next up with the wisdom of you all!

cheers

Dorje,

I've had a 5'8" Parkes/Friar Tuck Quad, Diamond Pin for about 12 years.
Best board I've ever owned in 27 years of KB'ing.
I really wouldn't say it is a "Weight Forward" style of board - but more of a middle weight (Sweet Spot).
Yes it is loose - but with box fins, so all you have to do is play with position?
Bigger waves I move the fins back and when the size drops off - move the fins forward.
It seems to go better in 5-6ft but I've had it still perform well in 12-15ft Aussie cyclone swell.
Works better on big open faces - turns on a dime - but will still hang in on a steep face - or deep in the pocket - mainly due to the thiness of the tail section?
I'm about to get a 6'2" Quad Pin - so will be about the same - if but for the tail area?
I'm going down to see Dave Parkes next week to order and discuss spray job etc.
Anything you want me to ask him - let me know?
He will be able to shed some light on any problems you may be having?

Stay Kewl Fella.

thanks techno

just the first hand brand/board specific information I was interested in gathering. You may well spy my purchase on the rack at Byron Bay as Im 2 weeks or so shy of full payment - hoping to have it down here for easter! Great for the ego/confidence to get a good session in at bells around this time!

I will look foward to putting my two cents in re quad v trifin after some good sessions

my old man being a fitter and turner by trade always said "good tradesmen doesnt blame his tools" with the full awarness that a hammer wont saw.

I cant wait to test some of the quad question ideas for myself

cheers
