What works & what doesn't and in what type of conditions. Got a "secret" only you and your shaper know???? Post it here... we can keep it quiet ;-)

New to kneeboarding

Post by Bramo »

Hey guys

First of all, I think this forum rocks. Iam from South Africa and started kneeboarding about a month ago. I used to bodyboard since I was a kid. A friend of mine gave me an old kneeboard to try and naturally I was hooked from the beginning. The bodyboard is gathering dust in the garage now. Kneeboarding is not big in SA and thats why Iam on your forum for any help and tips.
I surf mainly around Cape Town, which are normally beachbreaks and hollow waves. Wanting to get a new board shaped but not sure what to ask for. Weight wise and length? Iam 1.82m and about 90kg
At the moment Iam surfing a 5'10 x 23'5 x 2'38 pintail. Any info on new shapes will be appreciated.

I tried to attach a picture of my board, but not working.

Looking forward to hear from you.

Welcome Bramo, you have a fellow kneeboarder down there, Gigs Celliers.

It's not perfect, but if you go to the Memberlist and sort on Location, Descending order... around page 5 or so is about five other countrymen

Welcome! 8)

Thanks guys, appreciate the quick response. Will give Blast a call and try to connect with some of the locals around Cape Town. Now at least I know there are some out there!

Braam howzit from Durban , quite a few guys around Capetown , just here in Durban around 10 guys.
When you bump into other knee riders ask them for a wave the popular
boards and recommendations are not suited to everybody.
I got my own board built based on a whole bunch of ideas from this forum and i am very glad i did that.
Tried a board recently that a lot of people ride made by a highly recommended surfboard shaper who makes a lot of Kneeboards , and found it utterly crap ,too much stand up shaper influence is a bad thing for a Kneeboard.

Regards
Terence

If you can get to J Bay see Glen Darcy of J Bay Designs, shaped me 2 boards and shipped to Western Aust for me. Both excellent boards. A stand up shaper with 35 yrs plus experience and shaped a lot of knee boards in that time. See Pics

Thanks for all the info. Already got a way better idea about kneeboards form this forum.
Austo, your boards look sick. The board I am surfing now is an old Glen D'Arcy. Think its very old school but it works for now until I know what I want.

Howzit Bramo,

Theres a couple of kneeboarders around, generally the remnants of the old crew - scattered around the peninsula, if you want advice etc (for what its worth :? ) give me a PM

There are various options for boards in Cape Town, but shapers are generally standup shapers who just dabble in kneeboard shapes, the end result may not be as expected ! :(

cheers

Andy

PS Winter swells starting to arrive- yee ha

At the risk of getting a :P :P :P :P :P ,

Im about 83kg and 1.76m & surf a homebuilt rounded pin aussie-style thruster, about 5.11 x 22.5 x 2.75 with thin rails.....and yes I do use swimfins and a leash :D :D :D

Boards, wetsuits etc etc all live up in E-Bay, but I could bring some boards back for you to eyeball or try out.....altho they might be a bit underbouyant

Howzit bramo

I am from Port Alfred, and the waves here are hollow and powerful and perfect :D , I use a 5'7 fish and it held up perfectly up to 6ft, with winter coming you might want to get A BIGGER board you seem big so probably in the 6ft range and a rounded tail for smoother turns on those cold Cape town waves
