what is it that makes a performance board just that ...say over a board that is or has a quality of forgiveness to the less talented...ive noticed width may have something to do with it...??? 3/4 of an inch of the width does what?

questions

Headwax

I don't necessarily agree with volume assisting the amount of 'paddle' that a board has.

Paddle ability has much more to do with (forward) bottom curve and the way that curve allows water to enter.

Bottoms that have good water entry will paddle well despite the amount of 'bulk' (or otherwise) in the overall shape.

Maybe it's because I have never worn flippers that I am so concious of this..but you can actually feel water entering a good curve during paddling.

And if that curve is conducive to water entry during the paddle..imagine what happens when it planes.. :) ??

So to your answer?..do whatever length you choose for whatever reason..just make sure your curve works where you need it to.

I wonder why you think that a 'less talented' surfer needs more forgiveness than someone who rips?

(I actually know why..but had to pose the question back at you)

OK..less talented guys need release sure..but they also need bite.

Now..guys who rip need release..and I guess they also need bite.

Farrer will put his boards in the most impossible of situations and demand that they release.

Myself, on the other hand, will put boards in the most embarrassing of situations and pray that they release.

So you see, we all need the same thing..irrespective of how we surf.

At least that's how I view it anyway..

Xmas "Hey Bruce - I want you to tell me (and others) what u think when (the first thing) somebody tells u that their new board paddles well into waves........ha ha. Thinking about a conversation we had 12-18 months ago!!!!!!!!!!!
I had the same conversation (by email) with Bruce.
It just seemed to draw into the wave easier, compared to my previous
(Friar Tuck). Just a first impression; I don't notice it now...
and I still enjoy the FT quad...horses for courses.

Xmas, did you just pick up an old Jackson KB ?
I was watching on ebay and tempted to bid; it looked pretty nice

(can't figure how the quote thingy works)
I'm always stoked because at least that comment is positive

You know it could be argued that THICKNESS will make a board harder to paddle..

Your boards are around 2 1/2" max..imagine that I don't cut the bottom that you have and simply leave the foam at 3" (thus leaving the original curve of the blank in tact)....then I reckon I can guarantee the bottom will push water..and so will you.

Ahhh Bruce ... the reference to 3 inches made me laugh about our recent misunderstanding about the prelims for the red board

Hey Lowrider - yes I confess that was me. It needs a bit work but has great colours and should come up a treat when restored. I also bought a circa 84 Flashpoint that is in superb condition (couple of curved fibreglass stabilisers with a big centre fin). I'll bring it to show u soon Bruce - promise :D .

Lowrider,

We could be. But I'm trying to put a stop to the obsession that has become e-bay, second hand kneeboards, auctions etc. At the Mick Mock auction yesterday, I was the high bidder on a fully restored G&S semi spoon - alas, the reserve was ridiculous and my wallet didn't come out of the back pocket

Sorry Headwax - I know this is the ask the shaper thread. I should start a separate one on old/second hand boards!

A slight tangent to 'ask the collector'

Post by Shelfbreak »

While on the subject of exotic boards, I thought I spotted a light blue fish with those characteristic wooden fins on top of a car driving through Kings Beach the other day.

It was only the traffic and the turning circle of my magna (a prestige vehicle here in Australia) that prevented me giving chase for a closer look.

Perhaps one of our loacl collectors parading their exotic equipment ?
