Leon

Post by willli »

Leon was big. Standing in front of you, his weight leaning on your shoulders, his eyes staring you down as he breathed hot and moist in your face so that you would push him away to escape his awful smelling breath and yellow teeth with tinges of green here and there, he was a good friend. What made him stand out more than most was his crow. Jonathan considered the crow his, but crows have a different way of looking at what and whom belong to who and it seems the crow thought Leon belonged to him. The crow mostly followed Leon about, landing on his head or shoulder or back whenever Leon took a pause from walking. You could see Leon coming from around buildings cause the crow was flapping above him waiting for a chance to land. Jonathan couldn’t figure how a person could raise a crow and have it turn on you, but this one, able to speak his name so clearly, loved all his shiny things and would steal them and fly off to a tree or rooftop so he could sit there and taunt him. “JONNATAN.. JON,, NA,,TAN,,JONNA..TAN” the racket would go on for hours. Once the crow stole his keys and taunted him for a whole day, flying from place to place carrying the keys yelling JON..NA..TAN.
Well we were all up at the Fortress, Jonathan and Jimmy and John and me, and you had to climb down the clay cliff to reach the surf break. Leon came along even though he didn’t surf, and the crow of course, but they stayed at the top of the cliff. It was a clean day, waves 3-4 foot, and as the day wore on more and more people showed up to surf. Well one dude brought along this bitch who kept staring at Leon and making him real uncomfortable, and after about 30 minutes of this Leon’s brain sort of popped and he strode over to the bitch and tossed her off the cliff. The guy who brought her couldn’t believe his eyes and he paddled in at a feverish pace, struggling and falling over the rocks and dinging his board and such. But the bitch was pissed off and she wasn’t hurt, just dirty from the mud and clay, and she’s scampering up to get a piece of Leon. Well he’s just figuring where she expects to climb up and when she’s almost there, he picks her up and tosses her off again. The crow is pretty agitated, and he’s flying about yelling the only word he knows JON NA TAN JON NA TAN, but somehow figures in his crow brain that the really pissed dude might make it up as Leon tosses the bitch for the third time, so the crow dives at his head and the first peck sends him reeling backward right off the cliff and he rolls all the way to the bottom. Out in the water we were all laughing so hard we couldn’t breathe much less surf. And the dude made a BIG mistake, he swatted the crow with his arm which caused an angry glare from Leon’s eyes and he bounded down the cliff at full speed, the sight of which caused the dude to run for his life with his bitch following him as he splashed through water and fell over seaweed covered rocks. The crow now airborne and back to diving at his head even nipped his bitch in the ass.
Fortunately for him Leon hated water so Leon walked over to his board and sat down to wait him out. The crow let loose a nice load on his deck and promptly settled on Leon’s head. The dude was beside himself with fear and kept looking toward the lineup to see which of us might help. He was holding his bitch up out of the water and was tiring fast. Jonathan figured the fun was over so he paddled in, walked up to Leon and patted his back.
“Go home Leon. HOME!” Leon gave him a loving look, the crow added his taunt JON NA TAN, and the biggest German shepherd I have ever known trotted off toward town with the crow flying above his head. And the dude and his little bitch poodle, they left with their tails nicely tucked.
