Sunscreen

With the averge age of the kneeboarder these days this area should be used to post issues on health matters (surfer's ear, knee surgery, stretches, etc).

k-man traction pads sounds good to me - a cultural exchange developing into a common language

Turning style

Post by DarcyM »

Hey Darcy - interested in your turning style (hips, shoulder) in terms of rail and fin turning arguments - where do you kneel on your board -
I think I'm mostly back from center a bit, but the boards I've had lately are forcing me more forward on the board, with a more forward fin position. I try not to lean back to turn off of the tail (and fins) so much anymore, and so I try to initiate the turn more from the center to keep the speed going forward.

The last time I had a tri-fin (many many years ago), I remember the feeling, particularly when turning off the top of the wave, that I was whipping the board around literally through my waist. That is, the hips throw the board into the turn, from straight up to straight down in one motion, twisting at the waist and then the shoulders follow through. It was more of the body following the board. With the four fins, or perhaps as my style has gotten more fluid, I feel more like I'm driving thru the turns following the motion more closely with hands and shoulders, using the entire rail length. I think it's less of a pivot, not that pivots are necessarily bad (as long as you can maintain speed).

I'm about to get a new tri-fin, and we'll see if that whipping action returns ... or if I'm just too damn old for that kind of nonsense.

:D

Hey Dorje - how'd the post on traction pads get all the way over here to sunscreen? Not like we haven't segued completely off track before, but this is kinda wigging me out!

thanks Darcy

gota get some photos of myself as it seems the thought, the feeling, the actual method and the theories are all really independent.

as for how this ended up here - ever put your keys on the kitchen table only to spend 30 minutes trying to find them and some how they ended up in the door (ON the outside ready to lock and run) - friend comes over and says "hey mate - you left the keys in the door"

Back to sunscreen: What kind of zinc do you Aussies use? The kind from drug store here (US) is pretty slimy and almost runny and won't stay put on face very well. Is there some kind that sort of "sets up" so it stays in place if you accidently touch or bump it?

 Problem solved I think. Got some beeswax (any relation, Headwax?) and melted it in a jar and mixed in the zinc oxide from the tube. Now it is thick enough to put on with a trowel. Nice.

Also did a bit of on line research and found that titanium dioxide is a much better UV blocker than zinc. Mixed together they work LESS well than either alone. Can buy either one at art supply shops--used to mix pigments. Also online. Next batch I'm mixing powdered titanium dioxide with coconut oil and beeswax so I don't have the petroleum jelly and crapola that is in the commercial zinc oxide. Also cheaper.

If you try this (why would anyone want to do this unless they really really had to?) put it jar or can and place that in pot of hot water; the old double boiler tech. Easy and fast. (Not embarrased, that redness is sunburn fading out!)

Coppertone has a new zinc based suncreen out now. SPF 50. I used it exclusively in CR for a week. Out in the sun everyday for 6 plus hours no burning and I am one of those red haired, fair skinned anglo saxton types. It stays on really well, soaks in clear and basically works great. Look for it a Walgreens or Longs comes in a green tube. The kids stuff and adult stuff is the same. you don't need mix anything up. Runs about $10.50 for a big tube.

Hi Doc

I think the zink i use has titanium Dioxide in it - the word sounded rather familar on reading.

Zinc may well be a brand name now rather than just a chemical in australian stores

The Zinc we get here is thick - i wore some yesterday (early spring) to protect from wind and mild sun - I have to shave to get the stuff off!!!

hows the quad fin going Doc ? (digression) your initial quad question was the first thing i read on board design on this site - i had a surf a Bells beach yesterday in lumby and bumpy over head waves with great drops - I must say after 4 months on the quad, relative to the tri, im enjoying the extra something the quad seems to provide - i think i agree with Parkes and Bud's line on four fins and hold - no compromise on loosness relative to my talent either - perhaps its psychological

dorje, I'm liking it a lot but still kooking it. Haven't had much chance to ride it in any real surf. Weak, tiny wind swell only and I'm still trying to figure out how to pump and get some speed when the waves don't have any. If I was more gainfully unemployed I could drive around more and more often but I reckon time will solve the problem. The holding power and drive of quads depends I think as much on fin placement as number. If you put the pairs very close together its really just a fancy twin seems to me. Hoping for some small to medium good quality waves in Big Sur coming up...

Tried the Coppertone this a.m. Out from 8:45 to 10:30. Not exactly peak sun, praise be! Slathered that stuff on like buttah and let it dry then hit it. Got burnt. Mild but a definite warning. I feel like an albino. I think my home brew may be the necessary for the time being...

Good news is I found the throttle on my Stubb. Been having trouble getting it going in the mush. Turns out (psych 101) I was being too hesitent i.e. looking for reassurance from the board that I was doing the right thing as I was doing it instead of after. Made me move too slow by 1/2. And then some. Today, surf was 3 -5 foot faces w/ 5 sec intervals. Wind bump. Hard to see the waves for all the chop when looking at it from the beach. Got a couple close outs then one that I got several snappy turns off and connected 3 sections. Happy happy. Had enough speed that when I plowed the rail up front (twice) there was enough left over to pop it back out and still make the section. Finished with a nice foam bounce, wounded frog flopover. Onward...

Doc,

I read in a recommendation in a sailing mag recently for Panama Jack's Surf-n-Sport SPF 75. Haven't tried it myself.

On the "sunscreen causing cancer" issue, tp be serious, by skin specialist said the same thing when I went and saw her last year.

She said all the peopel who have been good and using sunscreen and not getting melanoma treatment, will probably be getting treated for some toxic chemical condition, or cancer caused by it at a later stage, and recommended getting into organic sunscreens.... which I completely forgot to do.

The ONLY stuff that works on me is the Aloe-Up range. I put the cream on at home before I leave for the beach, put the gel on at the beach and then, sometimes, layer their zinc over the top.

Works the BEST!!!! Def go the multi-layer with cream first and left to dry, and then the gel on top.....
One crowded hour of glorious life is worth an age without a name - so stay tubed!

Mr. Strange

It blows me away you got burnt. I have been using the stuff on my kids all summer at high altitude (+6,000 feet) and in and out of the lake and pool and no burning. One thing I did notice is that the kids do get red by the end of the day but by after dinner redness goes away and no burn. Used to freak my wife out, big time. I think they just get hot or the sun makes them red but there is no UV damage. What about wind burn, it was howling (20 knots!!!) at the coast today surprised you even could surf. Must have been jonesing big time. Sorry for the bum tip works for our family though.

Stemple, it's the drugs  but seriously folks, antibiotic induced sensitivity is a whole 'nother animal. Twas only a mild pink up and part was proly wind but still enough to make me paranoid. Still getting wierd rashes and sores on my hands from burn a couple weeks ago. New plan is the Coppertone under and then the homebrew zinc paste on top after that dries. That'll be like a rubber mask. Watch for me at a break near you on Halloween!

Funny about the wind/surf. Probably ties for worst surf conditions I've ever been out it but most fun I've had in awhile as I hit a breakthru in figuring out how to ride my Stubb and yes, I am referring to the Blast kneeboard and not some body part...

I was wondering about sunblock myself until recently. I eventally came to discover the Shiseido Sunblock Stick :D . It's excellent for your face. For lips- any lip balm with SPF over 30 works for me.
The coppertone can get me high if I inhale right after application
