Torn Meniscus for-MR

With the averge age of the kneeboarder these days this area should be used to post issues on health matters (surfer's ear, knee surgery, stretches, etc).

Torn Meniscus for-MR

Post by MWROBERTSON »

I have had severe left knee pain for weeks now. At times it got so bad, I would wake up at night in pain with no relief. I finally went to a knee specialist. X-rays and a MRI were done. (This really sucks as I had water on the knee for the past two years. In fact I had it drained seven times.) This is a whole new injury.

While waiting a couple of weeks for the results, I have been surfing on it anyway. I can feel the strain & pain and I can tell that I'm nursing it on turns and such.

Well, I got the dreaded news today. I do in fact have a tear in my meniscus. The Doc. wants to see if I improve over the next 30 days with physical therapy, anti-infamatory drugs etc. I will have to decide on surgery if things don't get better.

Either way this injury is not good for surfing, especially on a kneeboard.

Any ideas are welcome.

Quit dicking around and get the surgery. The sooner the better Mark. Nothing wrong with a good surgery.

I had arthroscopic knee surgery for a torn meniscus. Luckily the recovery time isn't so bad with the arthroscopic. I delayed the surgery for while, but the tear would float around and sometimes bind and cause pain. I recommend getting it over with. Good luck.

MR...just get it done!
I had a horse riding accident which resulted in the same injury. The recovery time is quick, just listen to your doctor and do what he says.

MR, you have a diagnosis! That's got to bring a measure of relief and now you can focus getting it squared away...hopefully ASAP!

Sorry to hear that, Mark. My advice: Get it done and get in the pool ASAP to keep in condition. Low impact exercise just as soon as the seam is sealed. What does your doc say about surfing with a brace by January?

quit sniveling and get it done, then do the physical therapy like a mad man. The only pain that lingered a little was on leg extensions under a load when it was extending through the position the knee was in while the surgery was done. Internal scarring I guess. It didn't affect surfing at all once i got through PT.

Knee

Sorry to hear about your knee pain MR.
More questions before jumping to conclusion.
MR you said you had "water on the knee for past 2 years ...drained 7 times."
You also mentioned: "This is a whole NEW injury."
Questions: Did you have any mishap or injury that may have relatively recently tore your meniscus? If yes, then you may have an acute injury and an underlying chronic condition.
If no new injury, then did the knee specialist specifically say the "water on the knee" was caused by the meniscus tear? If not, then again you may have more than one diagnosis.
Did the Xray or MRI report list any other pathological findings? Any loose bodies, arthritis, articular cartilage defect, synovitis/inflammation, bursitis, ligament tears? If you didn't see report, you may want to get a copy to review what the radiologist is seeing.
Did the PT or knee specialist do a thorough examination of your knee. Alignment, stability, flexibility, strengthen, provocation testing for areas of irritability, etc.
Did the clinical findings, MRI and Xray findings and your symptoms all point to the same source?
Right questioning, can lead to right answers and right treatment.
Which can then lead to you being in the water and happiness. And not the "water" being in your knee and misery.
