Knee pain

With the averge age of the kneeboarder these days this area should be used to post issues on health matters (surfer's ear, knee surgery, stretches, etc).

Knee pain

Post by PES78 »

In the last two weeks or so I've been having some knee pain from behind the knee cap. I went to a urgent care to have it looked at but the doctor didn't seem to good. Now I know my weight doesn't help the situation at all but was wondering if it could be from wearing swim fins. I haven't kneeboarded in a few weeks been trying out a paipo mostly. Has anyone developed any pain in their knees? I'm thinking of going winless to see if that takes the stress off the knee.

Knee cap pain

Post by day »

Hey Pes,
Sorry to hear about your knee pain. The knee cap (patella) makes a joint with the thigh bone (femur), called the patello femoral joint. Very common site to have pain. If you see a good PT or orthopedic surgeon, they can evaluate that area to determine if it is the site of your pain by doing a few clinical test. They can also check your alignment, tilt and tracking of your knee cap to determine if problems in these areas contributing to your knee cap pain. A special X-ray done in a specific position can tell if you have worn down the cartilage surface of the patella resulting in early osteoarthritis. You can also have chondro malacia of the patella which is a softening of the cartilage that can lead to pain. If having knee cap pain, going up and down stairs/slopes can be painful, especially going down.
If you are having knee cap irritation, wearing fins does increase the compression forces between the patella and femur, so potentially can be source of pain. On the flip side, strengthening of the quadricep muscles, especially the medial or inner muscle is one of the conservative treatment for knee cap pain. If have poor tracking of your patella, a brace may also help with this.
I would try to go finless and see if it makes a difference. You can also test the kneeling position on dry land and see if that in itself causes pain. if so, rest and go see an orthopedic specialist.
Wishing you health in the new year.

Hello all
I just had knee surgery a years ago-- meniscus clean-up and partial removal
Front ligament reconstruction (taken piece of muscle behind leg) and had a few stitches applied on my ligament located on the inner side by meniscus
All of this due to various accidents from skiing and motorcycle crashes

My question is DOES ANYONE WEAR KNEE-PADS TO PROTECT THEIR KNEES??
IF so which style/brand of kneepads do you recommend for kneeboarding??

anybody's input comments would be much appreciated at this time
it's all about the ride

Thanks day for that very informative replay. I'm going to see a doc in a couple weeks and take it easy on my work outs. Gonna hit the pool a bit for less impact. As far as kneepads go check out covepad.com I really like Casey's pads and he ships. Or if you close to OZ then Parkes sells pads as well.

Knee pad

Post by day »

Hey Knee rider,
Here is my feedback on your post. Most kneelos use a deck pad. That makes wearing a knee pad unnecessary for most cases and a lot easier than trying to keep a knee pad on your knee when caught by a clean up set. Sounds like you had an ACL reconstruction done. A lot of athletes wear protective braces after ACL surgery, but it is difficult with kneelos, as often the brace have rigid metal parts that may not feel great to kneel on. (Anyone out there wears a post ACL metal brace??) Plus it may leave a depression in your deck.
If you have a knee or knee cap that is hypermobile (loose) wearing a brace can help give some stability. I have a hypermobile knee cap and I wear an adjustable neoporene brace that helps to secure my knee cap. But I often have to reapply or adjust if caught by a clean up set.
Lot of great deck knee pads out there. This site can show you the way. If need more padding, just go thicker.
Good luck.

I too have developed a knee issue! For me it's always been the back but was t-boned by a drunk 5 months ago and the inside of my knee bashed into the steering column. It was painful right away and though I've worked at getting it strong again it's never been right since. It hurts enough to stop me in tracks if I bend my heel too far back toward my butt, but mostly if is gets sideways/shearing stress. Really cramps my style because I'm not so much a flow guy and mostly rely on torque (which is when it hurts).

Doc said just wait it out for a while, did but gonna start rehab soon, hoping it's not a partially torn ligament and just a sprain that's taking it's time healing.

I do find that a brace is helpful for land-based activities; will try one in the water soon. I think the consensus is a slip-on neoprene cuff with straps, knee hole cut out?

Anyway totally sympathize - saw all the knee issue threads when I first joined this board and thought poor suckers. Then one wasted azzhat blows a stop sign and the poor sucker is me! Hope you feel better soon!

I'm not post surgery but do have a tendon problem and use a metal brace on land if I'm doing something heavy duty (like an explosive plyometric workout for instance). It works great, and the metal is only on the sides of the leg so wouldn't mess up a board. But it would be hard to fit right over a wetsuit, and the metal would probably start to corrode in a few days from the saltwater. I'm gonna try one with plastic bracing down the sides.

Did you try wearing a knee brace? I also had this type of knee pain a few months back and my OS suggested me to wear a brace for some time. It really helped to reduce the pain.

There are levels of protection/padding. I think I'm using a Level 2 cross-strap, but may be level 1 as there aren't stays.

They go over the wetsuit. The straps are pretty solid, but as they age start to come undone. The brace still stays pretty much in place if it's sized right (a bit snug is better than a bit loose)

I've been in these since my first knee blow-out in '81/'82.

Down the page a bit are girdles... potential comic material there!
