RED TIDE AGAIN!

With the averge age of the kneeboarder these days this area should be used to post issues on health matters (surfer's ear, knee surgery, stretches, etc).

RED TIDE AGAIN!

Post by K-man »

Anyone notice the water color?Brownish tint, kind of foamy.Any strange flu like symptoms?
Surfed a few hrs yesterday, then that night with itchy ears throat.,,runny nose, thrashed about, finally had to sleep in the dog house.
Always appears this time of year, when the water warms-wonderful for those insidious little buggers-Got a pair of good nose clips, seems to help, although I get weird glances.
There are several dif species of these dinoflaggelates, and not sure which this one is.So..if ya feel kind of funky, what it is,thats it!
Can't take antihistimes-make me feel like dog-squat.

red tide

Post by K-man »

greetings,

This is my second day,of this crap.Cleared up last night,no hacking, gagging, sneezing.Mde a few phone calls further north, bodega area got it,all the way to p. arena!
Need agood NW breeze to push it offshore, and cool the water down. There's a small rideable swell.........Anyways nose plugs work well-not those skinny little plastic ones, salt water turns them to mush. The good ones have stainless frames.they work well-tough breathing thru the mouth,ya wanna surf???

Still some at Salmon yesterday though didn't much notice it today. Bad sore throat in middle of night and when woke up. Thought I was going to get something serious, but it vanished after a big glass of water and meditation.

My last couple years in Santa Barbara I would get really ill every time I surfed after a storm flushed the creeks. Never before that. Nasty people. What they putting in our waterways.

Last Fall, Central Florida had 6 weeks of red tide. Working in a lifeguard tower was absolute hell! We were issued masks , but they didn't help much. Chewing Big Red gum helped to mask the burn in our throats. During the worst week, no one could sit on the beach except for a French Canadian group. they were chain smoking fools. French AND Canadian :P
Red tide is common on the gulf side of Florida but rare on the east coast.
I hope I never see that crap again.

scroll down to the complaints...and you can stuff anything up your nose, ears or your tweety..organic,non organic, vegetable, mineral, perform various religious, satantic, voodoo rituals--don't matter-it's got as much chance as a fart in a typhoon. The stuff is insidious.

cheers

PS.Big-5 Has the plugs..SPEEDO be the name.

POST.....A YEAR LATER!!

Post by K-man »

 Here it is again.A week of s.east winds and this sh.t finds it's way into our little bay
Got a feeling this stuff incubabates off sf, past the sewer outfall zone, then gets pushed onto the beaches.
Seems there's scientific data that equates sewage, especially urine;[food I imagine] in the formation of the organism.

Been out every day this week, most excellent, but no sign of red tide. One possiblility - it's too dark when I go out pre-dawn and I'm not seeing it. Option two - the light makes it start cooking, so it's not as bad in the early AM? Warm water though that's for sure.
