After watching the footage of George, someone explain to me why holding one's rail while kneeboarding is not the "correct" way to surf.

Actually, if you watch Crystal Voyager, he's not a rail grabber, but more of a birdman.Maybe when he switched to the edge boards he went birdman?

I used my hand on the rail a lot when I started KBing. Probabbly has to do with the size of the boards back then (4"8"/4'10" and around 2" thick) and even back to my plywood paipos which wouild disappear under the waves if you fell off.

The smaller KB's also had a tendancy to bounce and one needed a hand on the board to keep the nose from burying.

I then rode boards with 'glass handles (prior to leashes) which kept my hands on the rail (boards were about 19 1/2" wide at that time). As I dropped the handles and started wearing a leash, the need to grab a rail constantly was also dropped

I still use my hands on the rails for hard directional changes and for throwing my boards around. Its just a part of my style and my history. Thre is just something great about fading way out into the flats and then cranking a bottom turn with your hand on the rail.

I think the whole rail grabbing debate is just a smokescreen for the real issue, that being whether to use fliipers (swimfins) or not.
