Bill Sharp (oh, what a controversial name! DRAMA!) got a pretty good sized one that day, it was on a bodyboarding site.
As far as the tow teams go, however, from the photos they published on surfline, it looked like there was absolutely no reason for the skis out the back at the cloudbreak. The waves looked like medium-large mushballs. Then again, I wasn't out there, and maybe surfline didn't publish photos of the biggest ones out there.

i caught 5 waves that day at seal beach soulthside..........it was awsome.......no one was paddling in that day at the oil rig exept for bodyboarding legend : CHad Barba who made the paddle from the pier!!!!...so tow teams were no big deal.........i did see a 30' face wave out there that day....it was published in a surf magazine ...although unnamed

dude he was right next to me for the duration of my session,,the macking ones coming through in the shorey he would stall at the top of the wave and side slip down engage his rail/get barreled/ 360airs/hug inverts/7-ups/ the whole barba bit...same amazing stuff you see at the wedge...hes way intense....while iwas getting dressed my friend told me barba was way past the pier and when i looked up i could only make a spec out in the distance....it was pretty overcast that day......but it was clear where he was going
