I tried to do this a few years back but well...that didn't happen. So I've got three weeks to go. Have a friend now living in Syndney to visit and then I want to stop in NZ.
Plan is Sydney Sat April 16- Mon April 25 and then Auckland Mon April 25-Sunday May 8.
Will be traveling with board and tennis rackets and maybe some clothes if I have room.
Don't know if you've already got contacts here in Auckland NZ but we can certainly help out down in Tauranga. Got a spare room at my place and a couple of us could probably organise a roadtrip to where the surf may be at the time. It's 4hrs to Gisborne, 4 hours to Taranaki, 2 hours to Raglan, 1 1/4 hours to the Whangamata bar or 10 minutes to the local.
Howard , thanks for the offer. It would be great to get some inside knowledge, surf with some of the kneelo community and share a few cold ones.
Scott, serious, not as much as I once was. However, I still like to play a bit, at one time grades and tennis paid for my education, my friend in Sydney the same so rackets will be in tow. I'de rather surf...
SF- send a pm close to the time and we'll get something organised. Looks like you arrive in Auckland on Easter monday. It's a couple of hours to Tauranga from the airport.
Back in NZ since Feb last year! Survived 7.1 and have since moved to the Kapiti Coast for work. (No waves, but good fishing.) Family and friends have had it pretty bad, but all are safe and well. Parents place was trashed inside, but it's still structurally sound and liveable. Water back on today but it will be a long road to recovery that's for sure. Glad I'm not there!
Quick question for you all. Any reason not to hire a campervan in NZ? It seems like a great idea with many benefits. Its an option not readily available elsewhere nor one I'm familiar with.
it,s the only way to see nz not to big though athough freedom camping not strickly permitted do it any way as with howie pm me when u get close will get u some surf and swallow some beer hoops
$550 sounds pretty good for 14 days and as Hooper says it's a great way to see the place. Depending on how far you intend to go we can hook you up with guys round the rest of the country.
Feral Mick from up the Gold Coast in OZ had one for the Worlds in 2009. He got around abit and seemed to find it good. You can free camp in certain areas and there are plenty of camping grounds with good facilities at reasonable costs.
Hope the swells we are getting at the moment keep coming through for the next couple of months. Been a brilliant summer here in the Bay. Scored big time on the weekend and looks like the next swell will be through later this week.
