LA layover

Post by gogglefog »

hello everyone,
I'm on my way to Chile and will have a one day layover in Los Angeles this Tuesday. Hoping to squeeze in a session there and hope to see some kneelos. I've never surfed in California before. How long does it take to get to Rincon from Redondo Beach?

Peter
when i was in Santa Cruz November 03 after all the advise I felt over dressed and swetted in my heat....yes you will need a full steamer but I felt a 5 mm was overboard for me....and that was 500 or so miles north of LA
cooler again....rubber up...but allow to remove as required....
See you in a week matee,,,I am there from tuesday lunch time on....but staying first 2 nights in Honalulu....then up to the plantation for the remainder
till the 19th
I will be looking for tourist partners to go game fishing and maybe island hoping etc....I am up for some fun times

Tony
Love that "greenroom" feeling...(don't panic I finally found it)..... good ole' winki on a good day

cheers Tony,
was worried about the temp - not sure i'll be able to get any water time (compromise - 4 days in LA for the wife in exchange for the 12 in Hawaii for me!!! ) and don't feel like packing a whole wettie on the off-chance of some water time!! will wait 'till Sunday.
See you at the plantation on thurs (could be up for some fishing) - come scratch around the "Beach House" - we are meant to have a ground floor unit.

After surfing the north atlantic 60 degree F socal should seem down right tropical 8)
On the way back from the north shore you'll probably want the 4/3.

Scoop and CC,
unfortunately the fishing on Oahu sucks. unless you're a beer fisherman (out to catch a buzz) it's pretty much a waste of time from shore. winter is also the slow time for fishing here. the outer islands are much better.
check out this link to see what we can catch from shore here.

if you do go to the outer islands drop me a line and i'll hook you up with all the scoops. (did you notice how many puns i fit into one sentence)!

I 3/2 is needed. I had a 5/3 when I moved from Santa Cruz to Santa Monica and only wore in once the first winter I was there......plus I had to surf with the zipper down so I wouldn't roast. I found a top 3/2 is all I needed for winter surf in the Southland.

I have a tendency to hit Topanga or north of Malibu instead of all the way to Rincon ( and there are many great breaks just south of that also).

If your in a bind, my daughter works at a surf shop at the corner of
Ocean Park and Main in Santa Monica, her boyfriend is a standup guy
(both literally & fuguratively) and can hlep you if you're in need of anything.

Let me know.

Cheers Beeline and Surfhorn - I'm stay inland directly north of Malibu (about 20 miles or so if i'm reading the map correctly!!!) will probably take a cruise down the coastal highway and if there is something, will probably head on out (wife permitting!!! )

Tony,
probably the only place to escape the swell in feb. is kailua-kona. there is a huge leeward coast blocking the tradeswell and bump. if not the best, then one of the best deep sea fishing grounds in the word. they start to drag lures as soon as they leave honokohau harbor. kinda pricey though. $250us for 2/3 day.
maybe www.westhawaiitoday.com has a catch report online (sports) to see whats biting or if it's slow.

Great call for fishing Kona, I have had several trips out of there during October (90's). We had a Marlin hookup before we had cleared the harbor jetties. It was very pricey and the boat keep all the fish.
