Kauai - 8/1 thru 8/6
I'm heading over to Kauai and thought I'd ask for local knowledge of summer surf spots. I'll be staying in Hanalei but will have wheels... probably squeak 1 or 2 surf days out if possible...
Any thoughts? Anyone there who wants to hook up?
Cheers,
Don

Dan,
My cousin is origanally from Aptos and is getting married - Morgan aka Gary Bowen hence our trip. He relocated from Puerto Escondido to Kauai and is pretty well set. There are a lot of SC'ers over there!
I'm set for car / lodging / etc. just thought I'd hook up w/ a local KBer or two!

Don,
You might just get swell in Hanalei.
There could be small swell, from a typhoon off Japan, when you arrive.
We are seeing tiny bits now out here and it's not in the forecast.
Haena (Tunnels) can pick up East tradewind swell.
Also Polihale on the West shore (end of the road) will get the Typhoon swell dead on.
Huge beach can be epic depending on the sand setups.
Surfed it big and seen it huge like Puerto but crystal clear water.
Spitting turquoise barrels, lefts, rights all up and down the beach.
There's always fun wind slop at various East shore spots there.
Small series of South swell predicted for all of next week.
Kauai is always bigger on it's South shore than here.
Check this for the next few days before you go.

Hmmmmm......... might just have to sneak over there myself

Don - My friend emailed me that he knows a lot of surfers...standup surfers not KBers. You can also ask John Mel since he used to spend a lot a time at Acid Drops and Canons staying with a KBer that had an A frame style house (I can't remember the name, though).
My surf buddy and old room mate Ken Emerson is also a musician. Look for his name and check it out if he is playing. He won a Grammy this year for is slack key guitar work. We are currently doing pre production on a recording project of recording a live performance of 1920's-1930's Hawaiian big band music.
