SR,

Care of our school auction last night, looks like we're now holding 6 nights at a condo in Waikoloa...

The windows are Apr 17-June 2, Sept 4-Nov 19, Nov 27-Dec 16...

Help me steer this gypsy wagon!

I'm guessing Fall/Winter is best... but I think Mrs. is steering towards that first slot.

So... given location, should I push hard for later? Are there SW/S options close by? (Looks like a road trip from there...)

You're North of there? Anyhow, hope to hook up for surfs! :D

Cheers,
SFK

hey SFK,
i saw that headline and thought "what did i do now?"
the first time slot is good for souths no doubt. we had a epic south season last year. you will have to drive at least a half hour to get the nearest spot. it can get epic but usually way more crowded as you basically head into town to get waves. think Honolulu.
i like the second time slot best because Oct. can be a great month for early season norths as well as end of season souths and even the possibility for a west. (small) statistically late Oct. has some good surf.
the last one....i don't like Nov.
every year in Nov. they close the beaches for a few days on the Kohala coast cus huge tigers move inshore. the winds can be funky.
May and October (last 20 days of each) are good months but anytime you make it over i can usually find waves...
there is a really good right at Waikoloa that needs a west or northwest. can get crowded but A-Bay is plenty fun. i live on the very northern tip out in the sticks about 35-40 mins from Waikoloa.
have a board for you if you don't want to bring ur own. 8)

Very cool, SR!

I mentioned the November dealio to Mrs, who went

and then 'How about week ending with Memorial Day?'

I'm OK with that, but hoping to lock into that 2nd slot... will update!

I haven't been to the Big Island since I was my daughter's age, so I'm very excited!

Appreciate the offer on the board. That could pan out nicely wrt costs and juggling luggage, etc... thanks!

On the family checklist so far are the lava flows, snorkeling, and Mauna Kea Observatory... any suggestion on other cool family outings are appreciated!

More to follow... I'll hit you on PM as the plans evolve. Looking forward to a surf or ten! :D

Rooster,
" a dishonest man only fears honesty" kick over a rock and find 5 pakalolo growers in these parts. me growing would be like bringing sand to the beach.

SFK,
the big island is probably the best island for kids. lots of sheltered water and things to do. i'll give some suggestions when you decide your time slot.
hats, sunscreen, backpacks for water and sturdy shoes you don't mind destroying are de riguer for everyone coming here. lots of cool spots require hiking to. keeping the keiki well hydrated, un-burnt and un-infected from reef cuts is a thankless job but soooooo worth it in the end. 8)

My biggest fear is Neocons back in the white house. It will take at least 10 yrs to clean up the mess they left this country and the world in. I really enjoy listening to neocons whine about Obama...it's like music to me!

...I still think getting caught inside at Jocko's takes it (cough cough, gurgle gurgle)
On topic, SFK if you happen to play golf, try the Mauna Lani resort. A little pricey, but some of the most beautiful real estate in the world.
