It's Saturday morning in New Zealand when a 7.4 earthquake has struck the South Island! Alot of damage, so far not very many hurt though.

They're talking NZ$2 billion worth of damage, no loss of life and only a couple of people with serious injuries. God was smiling on the people that day. Major infrastructure damage which will take a long time to repair.

Always looking for the bright side, the reconstruction process will be a huge boost to the economy of the region.

Its hard to get in contact with Bob these days ... he passed away on 1st January 2010 ...

Anyway back to tectonic plates and their penchant for shifting ... NZ is after all called the shaky isles ... something to do with that whopping great fault line running through the middle of the south island ... extremely fortuitous that no one was killed during the earthquake ... amazing actually considering the magnitude ... luck sheep shaggers those kay-one-double-ewe-ones ... thats K 1 W 1's ... the north island missed out on the fault line ... but second prize was a highly active volcanic zone ...

Every now & again I see Bob, or he makes his presence known.......

FYI the North Island did NOT miss out on fault lines. The deadliest quake in NZ was in Napiier in 1930 something. We had a 6.8 quake in Gisborne 2 years ago. People from here are going to Chch to help assess buildings, & share knowlege that was gained so they don't have to learn it again.

Hi Sue, most recent NI quakes registered 5.4 today at Porongahau and 3.6 at Waipawa both in the Hawkes' Bay. Also there has been increase in geothermal activity on White Island in the Bay of Plenty.

Thanks for enquiring about our well being Rooster, we're actually a couple of thousand km's north of Christchurch :D so we're great but look out if all this activity means White Island will erupt. We'll really be screwed then  , tsunami would hit within minutes.

Howard

Didn't know where on the 2 islands you were, just looked in the atlas and yeah your ok, 'cept for that eruption thing.

With that erupion going on in Indo maybe it will take some pressure off your mountain. Either way, just glad no one died, and from what I have been reading, most basic services got restored fairly quick. Gotta love that national spirit 8)

Still having after shocks of around 4. A number of 5s over the last few days. Hard to get a decent sleep. 300 something aftershocks totaling over 2 hours of shake rattle and roll. No, structural damage done to my place, I'm on the hill which is solid rock. A couple of suburbs on the flat suffered major liquefaction which hasn't helped things. Drinking water in most suburbs is now ok to drink. CBD will open tomorrow.

Hi Howard.
I think the new subdivision on the former swamp, that suffered liquefaction, was the subject of a campaign to get the Christchurch city council to prevent building there, as it was some of the last remnant of original wetland.
