Driving from Sydney to Phillip Island- where should we surf?

Post by Tom Linn »

Looking for a little help from the World Wide Kneelo Network-

Myself, Chris, Shew and Devo are driving the coast from Sydney to PI the week before the WT's. Other than Aussie Pipe we have no idea where to surf. Recommendations, revelations of secret spots, guided tours, directions to the best pubs and coolest little beach towns and camping spots would be greatly appreciated.

We are not above bribery and are willing to pay big in the form of beers before and during the WT's. If the waves are good enough you may never buy a beer at PI. Also, Shewy is willing to wear his SuperMan surf outfit at PI in return for directions to good surf. (not sure we want to see that but it would be funny).

We promise to give the locals all the waves and never name your surf spots.

Is there surf along the entire coastline or is it concentrated in a few places? Where should we focus our time as we have six days for the drive? PM me if you prefer.

We are doing the same drive but taking two or three days. Could get crowded with kneelos. We will also do the same drive going back.

The surf spots "are concentrated" along the entire coastline.
There are spots everywhere, except Woolongong where Steen lives. Absolutely no waves there, just ask him.

There are so many places to choose from that you'll have a hard time deciding. Many far better than Aussie Pipe.
So good that you're in serious danger of not making it to the comp. You're likely to score such incredible waves that you wont want to drive any further.

When you see any road that leads to the coast. Turn off the highway and follow it until you reach the beach. Then just paddle out. There'll most likely be a great wave going off and a good caravan (OZ for trailer) park / camping area.

Go online to Amazon or Borders and buy a guide book.
Read it and drool over the pictures.

Either of these will do nicely.
They show a lot, but thankfully not all.

We're also driving down the coast from Sydney. We're spending a few days in Sydney then taking about 3 days to drive south. Any advice on where to stay, what to see, and where to surf is appreciated.

Best to figure your distance and time for each days drive.
Factor in time for a surf.

Best conditions would be early mornings.
But this time of year it can be good all day.

With the above mentioned guides you really don't need any assistance.
Even without them you'll likely score.
I've driven parts of the NSW coast on many a trip and every time found great surf. Many times I surfed alone.

If you leave Sydney early, you can drive past Woolongong (where there are more than 20 spots without waves  ) and reach Ulladulla.
It's about 3hr 20 min. drive from Sydney.
You'll pass Aussie Pipe but that place is a bit fickle and the potential for rip off high.
If you have to experience Aussie Pipe, go with locals.
(But seriously, there are even better spots.)

From Ulladulla South you can just take your pick of a wide variety of waves.
Slab reefs, beach breaks, point breaks, river mouths any combo of all, you name it, it's all there.

It's not like Southern California where you can count on it blowing out by 10:am most of the time and good spots stretched relatively far apart..
And the coastline is so convoluted that there's nearly always some place handling a wind change.
It's just a series of headlands, reefs, river mouths and beaches the whole way down with good waves at most.

You can easily get in a few great surfs at many places without a crowd on the outskirts of most populated areas.
You'll get acclimated, you body clock set and tuned up for the event by maximizing your wave count. 8)

if you can snag yourself a copy of "Mark Warrens Atlas of Australian Surfing"
that will sort you out, it was published in the 80's i think as a hard cover and then came out in a glove box edition, it's a handy addition to the surf library covers region by region & which breaks are best in certain swells and wind conditions worth tracking down
once you've had black you'll never go back!!!

Sydney to PI is best spread over a couple of days. You could surf all day and drive at night  Have a look at Mallacoota just over the NSW border in northern Victoria.

  :o :o :( :( Honestly guys don't lead these poor buggers astray......they've only got a matter of weeks to look for waves......look keep your eye out for a sign that says "Ayers Rock" 8) 8) there is a particularly good break there called "wave rock" :D :D on the way you'll come across a place called Yass - well known for it's surfing history.... Tennant Creek also has particularly good sand banks at the mouth this time of year.
Shame on you guys, these guys are our bretheren from across the pacific and we should be sharing our local knowledge with them. who was that really nasty hombre who suggested south of Ulladulla  it's all desert out there guys it could take you weeks to find your way back if you survive the wilderness out there.

Peace, love and happy travels, Wolruss

Alright ... listen here you bloody seppo blow-ins ... I'll give ya the grouse ... dont listen to these numb-bats ... they is leading youse up da garden path ... numba won ... youse make sure to get ya asses to ozzie pipe ... leave the car unlocked ... windows down ... the yokels will place gifts inside the vehicle as a form of sacrifice to the gods of ksusa ... after you have washed the turds from the front seat and glove box ... god knows how they can s*&^ in there ... turn right and right again ... Burleigh Heads is the next stop on the road to PI ... on arrival ask for Sunny or his french mate ... they will set you up with the locals ... and some nice southern peelers ... once you have sated your appetite drive south once more turning right and driving south-west for about three days your next destination is Margaret River ... an extremely hospitable soft-cock wave ... but fun never the least ... the locals will even lend you their woman folk as a sign of friendship ... to good an opportunity to resist ... from here its just a leisurely drive to PI ... trust me ... I know.
