Grom Gathering

Post by Tom Linn »

Martin Murphy and I are talking about having a Grom Gathering in the next few months. Every one would be invited but the focus would be on getting the young guys out.

Also, rule #1- Groms and ROB's (Really Old Bastards) get priority on every wave. All you thirty and forty somethings have to back down on any wave that a Grom paddles for or that any one over 49 and a half paddles for.

That's a great idea. I'll get Harry out in the water too this time. If we could put some focus on coaching and training the kids for competition that would be great. How about some practice heats for the groms?

ha that sounds awesome I'd so be down for that, if its around the south bay. I'd be stoked if someone would let me ride one of their boards, and get the feel going again.

Hi Tom.

Hey I'm 26 do I count as a grom? I met a guy at the cliffs in HB named Cliff that kept calling me grom. Haven't heard that in while.

Being a Grom is a state of mind not an age.

Great idea. Would love to include my 15yr old nephew who's slowly getting into KB'ing for the past 6 months.

Only one problem, most posters are in OC or SD. I'd be on it, but limited to Saturdays and within 50 miles or so of Oxnard.

I would recommend somewhere in north HB like bolsa or the cliffs,
it is a little more open/spread out than the creek.
do you guys have a possible date planned for this?

Groms...

Post by jadams3 »

Good idea...... I don't have any groms of my own but it seems that every time I'm in the water groms on sponges approach me and ask about my board and KBing in general.....I've seen alot of posts discussing the way to inject new blood into our sport and it seems to me that encouraging groms is the way to go.....If during the grom gathering other kids see what's happening, we're bound to pick up a few new converts......again, great idea guys.... 8)

I was thinking Oceanside as a possiblity. Bolsa works if there is swell.

Martin,

I can bring my groms to a local gathering, but they may not do much surfing. They can come to pick up the stoke.

I do not recall Oceanside having any firerings, if not maybe we can bring a portable. We Odom's have at least a cord of cut wood so that is not a problem.
