South Oz Comp

Post by budgie »

Thanks Phil Arthur and the SA crew for organizing the upcoming contest.

It has been a bit of a drought this year and looking forward to some cold SA waves.

Havent been to Dribbleton at Victor Harbour since May in 1985 for the oz titles.

The SA team back then was G. Giles and G. Gordon are those guys still around?

The VIC team was Phil Chadwick, Mike Distascio, Rob Taylor and Chris Carey.

The WA team was Marc Fitzpatrick, Garham Wills, Greg Budgen and Ian Swain.

The TAS team was Bob Syrett.

The QLD team Brad Arman, Glen Crawford, Dave parkes and Dale Ponsford.

The NSW team Baden Smith, Andrew Smith Damian Coase and Danny Hanlon.

In the foot board section there was some great names Ross Clarke Jones, Nicky Wood, Richard Marsh Mark Sainsbury,Sean Riley, Brett Hodge, Tony Ray, Greg Brown, Dave McAuley, Matt Branson, Paul Patterson.

Ah Memorys,

Hay Budgie who won the Aus title that yr...Was it baden? and who took the miner placings...

These guys were big influences on my surfing Phil Chadwick, Mike Distascio, Rob Taylor and Chris Carey...

I think Rob lives near Noosa nowadays a great bloke and awesome surfer...

Iove to catch up with him next time im up north

Parkesy won the event and as far as minor placings go my info doesnt go that far and neither does my poor old memory.

I got equal 12th which I think is almost dead last.

I was greatly influenced by the VIC crew, some of whom still display a high calibre of kneeboarding.

But I do know for the next 4 years a young upstart Simon Farrer turned kneeboarding on its head and won 4 straight titles. And then he won his first of many World titles.

Was that the year that Chadda won the final but came in second over all on points with the old scoring system, where points accumulated from previous heats?

i think later on he won the pacific cup and got to surf in the UK where he won that event..

Yes and Simon did turn the kneelo world upside-down and progressed our sport.

:D

Kneeezepleeze 12th place in Au is still a pretty good result.. just to make the team in those days with sooo much depth of kneeboard surfing around was a win :P

It has been 30 years since this little black duck has won a contest.

YAHOO

I cannot express my gratitude enough to Phil Arthur and the rest of the very hospitable and friendly crew.

Phil has so much passion for our sport that overflows and infects us all.

The numbers were down for the comp this year and because of his 3 to 5 year plan of making this contest a permanent fixture he put in the shortfall of prizemoney himself.

There are a few others like Phil who have a selfless passion for our sport like Jim brown taking on the monsterous task of the World titles and John Clingnan the thankless Presidency of the KSA.

So long between drinks of victory, cant wait to do it again, hopefully not another 30 years or I will be 76 and in the Real old bastards division.

There is a brief write up of the comp on the SA website.

AB there was a fair bit of trophy smuggling across the boarder to Vic. And very pretty they are too. Great work by Craig.

I tried, but even with flippers on I couldn't catch him, he was on a mission.

Viccos not invited to Coffs this time AB otherwise we would have been there. Hopefully Coffs is back on the calendar next year. Having said that you may yet get a visit from Budgie in the next couple of months and 'she who must be obeyed' and myself will be there in a couple of weeks but not for surfing.

Thanks Dua and Kev.

Yeah fair call but to be truthful Vico's aren't usually invited anywhere but they still turn up
as for the other matter, heading up this way and not surfing, apart from the fact that this is not the best time of year for waves, nevertheless if you find yourself needing to get wet and without a surfcraft gimmee a call iv'e got spares
once you've had black you'll never go back!!!

Thanks Wolruss.
Interestingly I have memories of surfing with my Dad as a teenager. He sails a 16 foot catamaran these days but still has his old plank in the garage.

Full write up of the SA comp and results is now online:
