R.I.P. Shannon Berwick

Post by Tinso »

It's with a heavy heart I type this post.

Last Wednesday 13th June, we lost our fellow Novo and mate Shannon Berwick.

He leaves behind his partner Jane, and beautiful daughter Mia, to whom I offer my deepest condolences.

I can only hope he's sitting deep in Huey's tubes right now on a 7-footer in the land of eternal offshores!

For those who can make it, there will be a paddle-out in Shannon's honour next Sunday morning 24th June at Newcastle Beach (his local) at 05:30.

R.I.P. mate...the next tube is for you.

Shannon was among the vast number of people I haven't yet had the chance to meet. His passing in this way is no less tragic for that fact. What drives a man to such an act none of us can say. Our thoughts and prayers are with Shannon's family and friends, especially his partner, Jane, and daughter Mia. So very sorry to learn of your loss.

To Shannon's friends and family, our condolences. A terrible and tragic thing to hear. My heart breaks for the daughter and the partner. Sad.

So sorry to hear this news. We only met Shannon in March when we shared a house at Phillip Island. Really enjoyed his company, humour and passion for kneeboarding. Our condolences to his family. Craig and Gail

well... what can you say... Shannon had a beautiful heart, he had guts of steel, and was an ace kneelo. Mad as a hatter in a good way, in a contest he'd run you over out in the water because he was so concentrated on the wave he wouldn't see you.

First time I met Shannon we were out at a local point break where the takeoff zone sucks out pretty dry on a double suck rock ledge. The kinda break where you surf when it's too big for anywhere else. Shannon and I were having a chat when the horizon jumped a few feet and we both started scratching for the horizon, I was sh**ting myself as the wave hit the ledge and started double sucking, and I just punched through the lip, swearing with fright, sure I was gonna get dragged over the falls - and when I came up Shannon was gone.

Poor guy I thought...

But of course he'd turned around half way up the face, popped his board straight into the barrel without a thought for face planting on the reef.

Later he paddled out with a bit of smile, cause he' been barelled almost all the way.

We'll miss you Shannon.
Rip mate. I just know there's great waves where you are going.

A sad premature loss of one of the nice guys.

Those of you who were at the World's in Tahiti will remember Shannon's great run in the open.

The paddle-out is definately an early one, and from what Mel tells me, it's a gather-at-the-beach time of 05:30, so we can be out there for sunrise.
I'm pretty sure the Newy crew have organised it, not just the Novo's, hence the early start.

Hope to see as many of you there as can make it - it'll be great appreciated.

P.S. Just had to do a quick edit of my first post after some very wise, and greatly appreciated advice.
I wrote with a cloudy head yesterday, and hope I didn't cause any offense.
Thanks for the heads-up.
