Here's an idea ala Albert.

How about a regional team's challenge at the Santa Cruz event? A little regional rivalry to pump up the competitive spirit? Winners receive bragging rights and a round of drinks on Saturday night.

Teams could be scored based on final results, regardless of division. The average score of all team members would be the team score. Teams should have at least 4 members. Low score wins. Scoring all divisions equally levels the playing field and prevents a talent rich team from dominating.

1 point = 1st place finals (any division)
2 points = 2nd place (any division)
3 points = 3rd place (any division)
4 points = 4th place (any division)
5 points = surfed in finals (any division)
6 points = surfed in semi-finals (any division)
7 points = surfed in quarter-finals (any division)
8 points = all other participants

Based on entries it looks like there could be teams for:
Nor Cal
Santa Cruz Area Home Team
Central Cal
Los Angeles
Orange County
San Diego
International and Out of State

The surf is slowly picking up here. Don and I just got out. It was warbly, but worth a paddle at our favorite beachbreak.
