hey Jon
do foreigners get a look in on this ??????
Having only looked at "The Lane" when there almost 2 years ago now ..... don't you just jump off (about 20 - 30 ft drop) near the old lighthouse..... and cream a wave for the full length of the bay .....then have someone drive you back out to the point ?????
record it then post it....(the orientation)
Dan...
can you send me a list of ocean front accom .... you were going to get back to me????
I have a great poster of the lane (California classics) with what looks like 3 kneelos paddling out >>> would be at most surf shops

Tony - I will put a list together for you. I think the organizers are doing this but I haven't heard.
The Lane can be a pretty fun wave and you can get some long rides.
During a contest, I've biked friends back out to the point after a long ride so they can jump back in and get more waves during their heat.

Details to follow...
All,
Just a quick note under this thread to let you know the organizers (usual suspects
) are working to get the lodging, nightly venue, sponsors, entry form and sponosors lined up.
We'll post the info on the homepage very shortly. Looking to have most of this stuff nailed by the end of August.
Hang tight.
Dan, I'll call you Thursday.
Cheers,
Don

The Lane and Beyond
If it's as big as those photos folks are posting, I'll hop on that bike, Dan! How about a team of jet skis to fly the contestants back out to the peak ala the pros at Bells and JBay?surfhorn wrote:Tony - I will put a list together for you. I think the organizers are doing this but I haven't heard.

How fun would that be ... ride a big right all the way to Cowells and then rest on the way out for the next one! Paddle, drop in, repeat.

Of course, one ride all the way to Cowells may take the entire heat. How would you score that? Not too good for the wave count though ...

Darcy - I've had a few long rides at The Lane but once, waaaaaaaay back in the 70's, I caught a wave at 2nd reef and rode it all the way into Cowell's and into the base of the pier. My legs were shaking so bad that I had to concentrate just on planing straight to make the wave, no energy for turns towards the end. It was all I could do to just walk back to my car.
An old time kneelo (and pro surf photog) Dan Devine was on the wave in front of me. We couldn't believe that we connected all the way through. We were laughing like mad men.

GUYS
I hope you realise I am referring to The World Titles next year re my questions about "the lane" .....
as again your comp interferes with the PI comp here
Next year dates maybe could be worked out early so to have both without any interference with either comp
As you probably know the Phillip Island comp is the longest continually run surfing comp in the world .... this year in its 22nd year
cheers for now

Scoop,
For the World's in 2006 we have tentatively scheduled Pleasure Point for three days and Steamers' Lane for three days. The dates are the first full week in December. (Monday thru Saturday)
This date will not conflict with the PI comp. Also, it provides an ideal wind and swell window for the Santa Cruz area.
The location could change if we find a better venue. However, we will definitely respect the timing of the PI comp.
We would have liked to avoid the conflict with the PI comp this year but the 17-19th was the only date for which we could obtain a beach permit at the Lane.
