I have to say that this is really really awsome! I cant believe how many people actually want to send a kid from the US over to PI. I really love the support you guys are giving me and the other guys I surf with over here in San Diego. I would take this opprotunity in a blink of an eye. I do have a four day weekend during the competition, so i would be more than willing to be in a plane for 48 hours to get some of the best waves of my life and meet some great people. All I have to worry about is doing good in school before im able to go.

Thanks again guys for all the support!!

Good points everyone. Times and attiudes may have changed from the "good old days." When we were kids our parents would drop us off at the beach at 8 a.m. and pick us up at 5 p.m. We'd play in the streets well after dark and run off to far reaches of the ballpark during Padres games! I don't see much of this happening anymore. Too many scary stories on the news.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves on this one. We need to raise some money first and see what interest is out there! I suspect a lot of groms may not be on this Web site as often as us grown adults (thank God for that). Let's give this a little time and see what comes of it.

I have to agree with Sam, plus add; this is basically the grom trip of a lifetime! I'm super stoked! Seriously, Thankyou so much for everyone who has donated for this sponsored trip, and any of us that get to go is the luckiest kid in our generation. And if there is enough money for a "team" of Young U.S. Kneelo's to go then we would be the luckiest Youth's of our generation. I would be so stoked (given i was one of the lucky), to have some other fellow youth U.S. AKC Kneelo OR A BBK Grom (The next generation of kneeboarders to push it to the limit), to go with over to PI.
-And I really like the idea of no parent coming over with us, because its just like an exchange student type experience then. That way who ever goes gets the full experience of a new country. We are kneeboarders, we are all about opening our minds to new experiences. :D
Thankyou KSUSA for helping make this idea of sponsership, come alive. Thankyou Jack and Albert as well, for starting this and assisting it all the way. Joey and Taylor Thankyou Also!
Still Stoked Teenager,
Shaun M :D
P.S.- All of us U.S.A Teens and Groms that qualify, better start training!

I've thrown my money in because I'm hoping it's not the trip of a lifetime for the lucky grommet or grommets that get to go. I hope it's just the start for these lucky kids.

I think the foundation for what Martin is refering to is being developed in this thread. It would be short sighted to send any minor overseas without taking the proper steps to ensure that the minor participating will be taken care of by their hosts. Also it must be determined that any prospective hosts are capable handling the responsibility.

Sam and Shawn I glad you finally decided to chime in. Your enthusiasm will spread.

I agree Wino, good to see Sam and Shaun's input - makes me feel that someone at least appreciates the effort that so many are putting in to give young fellas a chance to come to Phillip Island. :D :D
M.Murph, I can appreciate where your coming from as a parent - but I do feel there is a point at which this thing can get over complicated - don't get me wrong I wouldn't even think about telling another parent how to raise there own child ( I'm not sure that I remember seeing anyone doing that on this thread ) from what I have seen of the people involved with the kneeboarding movement in Australia, they seem to be a responsible, very family oriented bunch themselves. I know our illustrious club president, Smurf, entrusted his boy Blake to two of our finest club members up at the Coffs Harbour comp. and yes you are right Smurf knew who they were.
Is there anybody coming over whom you know and trust, or maybe someone over here that you know and feel similarly about ? If not, how about coming over yourself, if not maybe next time or perhaps at the worlds in NZ. As far as injury or being sick, wouldn't that be the same risk they would be exposed to in the USA. Please don't feel that I am minimising your concern, this thing that Jack and Albert have miraculously thought up on short notice and others have made happen on this site is inspirational, but short notice is the key here, a small window of opportunity for maybe a couple of lucky teenagers - if your not happy with the arrangements, then don't participate by sending your child, but put some of your good ideas into operation for something a bit more permanent for perhaps the worlds. I don't really know how to say this any other way, so please don't take it the wrong way "be a part of the solution".
Cheers Wolruss

i'll only just jump in on this because i just got back from a trip to OZ with my 9 year old daughter. i was amazed at the hospitality and strong sense of family and friendship there. we stayed at a caravan park in South Durras and met a couple with a daughter the same age as Kel. we had a potluck that night in the camp kitchen and they casually suggested Kelly attend Bateman's Bay school the next morning with their daughter and Kel said she was up for it. i met before school the next morning with the principle and he said "no worries" just a contact number. it all felt right so off she went. she had a mind blowing day. things are different in OZ.
this was just a one off experience compared to the guy's i met from this site who opened their homes, refriderators, hot showers, computers, to us....... each and every one. 8) 8)
i'm not telling anyone what to do. just that from my experience Russell and Steen are so right about their scene.
i'd also like to generously offer to represent anyone or any organization at Phillip Island if you buy my plane ticket over to Melbourne. i'll call in sick or whatever and happily stay at the Ceglowski Mansion eating four'n twenty pies to help defray my own expenses.
for a considerable extra fee (optional) i will have your logo tattoo'd on my ass. 8)

kneeboard ohana

Post by Kauaikneelo »

Kneeboard Ohana,

That is the only reason most of us are on this site. Let's work to develop and expand our KB Ohana. People met at the worlds, NS gatherings, previous events, etc... we can develop that network of trusted folks.

Any parent who would not be worried about their kids at any age is suspect. Yes the world has changed, but it means we as parents have to be more heads up than our parents were and so we need to teach our kids to be also more heads up. With the changes have come good things and this site is one of them.
We would NOT EVEN be talkng about such a postive thing like this or be able to connect (or re-connect) with all you worldwide to arrange anything. Lets not hold back the kids, but thru our KB ohana, give them a safe positive trip. Like we used to have when the world was different. The difference is WE, as parents, have to go the extra distance to see that it happens.

Make it so number two.

OUTCAST OHANA TOGETHER! (oxymoron?)

aloha -k
