Everyone begins in the Open Division. As a contestant typically places in the lower half of the heats, he eventually drops down to the AAA or the AA (for those who place a bit lower). By about the quarterfinals, every contestant is now locked into the rest of the contest being surfed in either the Open (the best), AAA or AA. Losing (lower half of the heat) at this point means your surfing is done for the contest. Prizes/trophies are then awarded for the finalists in all three divisions. This is something of a simplification, believe me. Tom Linn is to be commended for overseeing this whole amazing process that allows all the KSUSA contestants to get in plenty of surfing and gives the highest percentage of surfers a shot at making the finals against kneelos of similar ability. He must have mastered his calculus somewhere along the line...

As far as water patrol, it was very good at the contest--generally. Some of them were quite aggressive at fending off other surfers, either when it was someone he new who was trying to get privileges based on his friendship. There was, however, one breakdown at the last heat on Friday. As the sun was setting, the water patrol prematurely took down the red buoys marking the contestant area. Immediately, surfers paddled into the area and began taking waves that clearly were for the contestants. That should never ever happen. Otherwise, they kept everyone out of the kneelo lineup, which was no small task as some incredible waves were rolling through the Point at the Lane and no waves half the day at the Peak.
